If you want versatile and valuable travel rewards but can’t afford a premium annual fee, the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card is a great place to start. The card offers a sizable welcome bonus plus solid rewards on everyday purchases. When it’s time to redeem your points, you’ll get more value if you use them to book travel through Chase Travel℠. Alternatively, you can transfer your rewards to one of Chase’s many airline and hotel transfer partners, usually at a 1:1 value.
Rewards: Earn 5 points per dollar on travel purchased through Chase Travel℠, 3 points per dollar on dining, select streaming services, and online grocery purchases (excluding Walmart, Target and wholesale clubs), 2 points per dollar on all other travel purchases and 1 point per dollar on other purchases.
Welcome offer: Earn 75,000 bonus points after spending $4,000 on purchases in the first three months from account opening.
Annual fee: $95
Other benefits and drawbacks: The card offers up to $50 in annual statement credits each account anniversary year for hotel stays booked through Chase. You’ll also get perks, such as statement credits, bonus rewards and complimentary subscriptions with several partners, including DoorDash, Instacart and Lyft.
When you travel, take advantage of the card’s various protections, including primary auto rental collision damage waiver, trip cancellation and interruption insurance, baggage delay insurance and trip delay reimbursement. You’ll also get purchase protection and extended warranty protection when you use the card to shop.
Although the card’s rewards program is one of the best out there, its low base rewards rate and lack of premium travel perks could leave some travel enthusiasts wanting more.
