What Is Chase Sapphire Reserve Purchase Protection?

The Chase Sapphire Reserve card includes numerous benefits and protections to justify its $550 annual fee. One of these is purchase protection which defends eligible retail purchases against theft, damage or accidental loss in:

  • Covered situations
  • Up to a maximum dollar amount
  • When an incident occurs within a short period after purchases

Purchase protection provides secondary coverage. This means it does not duplicate coverage and only pays after your homeowner’s, rent, auto or other insurance coverage is exhausted.


How Long Is Chase Sapphire Reserve Purchase Protection Valid?

This benefit covers your eligible purchases for 120 days from the date of purchase. This is about four months of protection for a covered incident.


How To Use Chase Sapphire Reserve Purchase Protection

Purchase protection with the Chase Sapphire Reserve® is automatic. You don’t have to register your card to activate coverage. Simply use your Sapphire Reserve credit card to pay for an eligible purchase and this benefit automatically protects your purchases.

What Are the Coverage Limits of Purchase Protection?

The Chase Sapphire Reserve purchase protection limits are generous at $10,000 per claim and $50,000 per year. The maximum for each claim is the purchase price or the protection limit, whichever is less, or what it costs to replace or repair your covered item.

What Does Purchase Protection Cover?

Chase Sapphire Reserve purchase protection covers a variety of items purchased through online and in-person retailers. The following purchases and costs may qualify for coverage:

  • Personal property purchased with your credit card
  • Items purchased with Chase Ultimate Rewards® linked to your account
  • Purchases made in the U.S. or outside the country
  • Gifts purchased for friends and family members
  • The deductible portion of your other applicable insurance coverage on eligible items

Note that this benefit covers new retail purchases, not used or preowned items. Refurbished items that come with a warranty are covered because they aren’t considered used or preowned.

Which Purchases Are Excluded?

Chase Sapphire Reserve purchase protection does not cover every purchase. The following types of purchases are excluded:

  • Animals or living plants
  • Antiques or collectible items
  • Boats, aircraft, automobiles and other motorized vehicles
  • Computer software
  • Items purchased for resale, professional or commercial use
  • Items in your checked luggage
  • Items that vanish in an unexplained manner
  • Medical equipment
  • Perishable or consumable items like cosmetics, perfumes or rechargeable batteries
  • Theft or damage from abuse, fraud, hostilities, normal wear and tear, confiscation by authorities, floods and other extreme situations

Additionally, if your loss involves a portion of a pair or set, this coverage only applies to the stolen or damaged item. The exception is items that are normally sold as pairs or sets and cannot be replaced individually.

How To File a Purchase Protection Claim

When an incident occurs, you must file a claim within 90 days to get reimbursed for your lost, damaged or stolen item. The administration may deny claims that fail to meet this 90-day deadline.

Start your claim by calling the claims administration or filing an online claim. Within the U.S., you’ll call 888-675-1461. If you’re outside of the U.S., make a collect call to 804-281-5772. Visit eclaimsline.com to submit a claim online.

For stolen items, you must file a police report within 48 hours of the theft. Ask the police for a copy of the report for your records and to complete your claim.

To finalize your claim, you must complete and sign the claim form and provide any requested supporting documentation within 120 days of the incident date.

What Information Do You Need To Provide?

Supporting documentation is necessary to receive compensation for your claim. Start by recording the time, place and cause of the incident. Additionally, your request should indicate whether you want the item repaired or replaced and how much it will cost.

The administrator will clarify which documents are needed, but a general list includes:

  • Completed and signed claim form
  • Credit card account statement showing the last four digits of your card number, transaction date, vendor and amount
  • Documents supporting multiple forms of payment, if applicable
  • Copy of itemized store receipt showing the payment was made on your card
  • Copy of documentation of any other settlement of the loss, if applicable
  • For theft or loss, a copy of the police report, fire department report or incident report to substantiate the loss
  • Any other documentation requested by the claims administrator or you feel is necessary to substantiate your claim

For repairs to damaged items, you’ll need to get an estimate that shows the type of damage to the item. If you’ve already paid for repairs, provide a copy of the receipt.

Keep damaged items in your possession throughout the claims process. In some cases, you might need to send it (at your expense) to complete your claim.

How Will You Receive Reimbursement?

Once the benefits administrator approves your claim, you’ll be reimbursed in one of two ways:

  • Repair or replace the item, or
  • Pay to cover the loss

You can typically expect to receive a decision from the claims admin within 15 days of receiving your documentation.

Your payment amount will be your original purchase price or the claim limit, whichever is less. The reimbursement amount does not include shipping and handling charges you may have paid.
