RuPay is India’s indigenously-developed multinational financial service that was launched by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) as a payment service system. Now, its function is exactly the same as that of any other payment service systems, namely, VISA, Master or American Express. It is accepted everywhere in India and many other countries have also given permission for its use.

Payment service providers have better networks than any other financial institution and are accepted globally as they have license to do business with more or less all the countries with a proper banking system.

There was a monopoly of American companies in this segment but RuPay is the dream child of the Reserve Bank of India and the Government of India to break into the market. The government has done tie-ups with a number of countries and RuPay services are expanding every day.

Here’s a list of the top RuPay credit cards available in India.

Methodology for Selecting Best Rupay Credit Cards

Selecting the best RuPay credit card involves considering various factors to align the card’s features and benefits with your financial needs and spending habits. Here is a methodology to help you choose the right RuPay credit card:

Assess Your Needs and Goals: Determine your primary objectives for getting a credit card. Are you looking for cashback rewards, travel benefits, or low-interest rates? Understanding your goals will guide your card selection.

Review Your Spending Patterns: Analyze your spending habits to identify where you allocate the most funds. Different cards offer rewards or benefits tailored to specific categories, such as dining, groceries, or fuel. Choose a card that complements your spending preferences.

Evaluate Annual Fees and Charges: Consider the annual fee and other associated charges for the card. Compare these costs with the potential benefits, such as rewards, cashback, or discounts, to ensure that they outweigh the fees.

Credit Limit and Eligibility: Check your credit score and eligibility for the card. Cards with higher credit limits may be more suitable if you have substantial expenses, while lower limit cards can help control spending.

Interest Rates: Review the card’s interest rates, especially if you anticipate carrying a balance from month to month. Low-interest cards can be a better choice if you plan to use the card as a credit line.

Rewards and Benefits: Examine the rewards and benefits offered by the card, such as cashback, discounts, and travel perks. Select a card with features that align with your preferences and provide tangible value.

Redemption Options: Understand how you can redeem the rewards or benefits associated with the card. Some cards offer flexible redemption options, while others may have restrictions. Choose a card that offers convenient and appealing redemption choices.

Grace Period and Billing Cycle: Evaluate the card’s grace period and billing cycle. A longer grace period gives you more time to pay off your balance without incurring interest charges.

Additional Features: Some RuPay credit cards offer additional features like airport lounge access, insurance coverage, and concierge services. Consider these extras if they align with your lifestyle and travel habits.

Terms and Conditions: Carefully read and understand the card’s terms and conditions, including late payment fees, penalty charges, and any restrictions. Ensure you are comfortable with these terms.

RuPay Network Acceptance: Check the RuPay network’s acceptance in the regions you frequent. While RuPay cards are widely accepted in India, their international acceptance is growing, but it may still be limited in some locations.

Customer Support: Consider the quality of customer support and service provided by the issuing bank. A responsive and helpful customer service team can be invaluable if you encounter issues or have questions about your card.

Compare Multiple Options: It’s advisable to compare multiple RuPay credit card offerings from different banks to find the one that best matches your requirements. Utilize comparison websites and tools to make an informed decision.

Seek Recommendations: Consult with friends, family, or financial advisors who have experience with RuPay credit cards for their recommendations and insights.

How Does a RuPay Credit Card Work?

Banks typically collaborate with payment service providers, such as Visa, MasterCard, and RuPay, to issue credit and debit cards. These payment networks enable transactions and help banks make or receive payments, both domestically and internationally.

Tie-Ups with Multiple Providers: Some banks choose to partner with more than one payment service provider. This allows them to offer a variety of card options to their customers, catering to different preferences and needs. For example, a bank may issue both Visa and RuPay cards.

RuPay as a Payment Service Provider: RuPay is indeed a payment service provider like Visa and MasterCard, but it primarily focuses on domestic payment processing within India. While it’s widely accepted within the country, RuPay’s international acceptance is growing, although it may not be as widely recognized outside India as Visa or MasterCard.

Bank Interactions: Payment networks like RuPay do not directly interact with cardholders (subscribers). Instead, they work through the issuing bank. Cardholders receive their RuPay cards from their banks, and the bank handles customer support, card issuance, and transaction processing.

RuPay Sign on the Card: Correct, a RuPay credit or debit card will bear the RuPay logo on the card, making it easily distinguishable from cards issued by Visa or MasterCard. The presence of the RuPay logo indicates that the card operates on the RuPay payment network.

Applicability: The information you provided about the RuPay logo applying to both debit and credit cards is accurate. RuPay provides services for both types of cards, allowing banks to issue RuPay-branded debit and credit cards to their customers.

Types of RuPay Credit Cards

There are all kinds of credit cards launched in their RuPay versions, and the number is increasing every day. There are cards which were launched originally in their Master Amex or Visa card versions and are now also available as RuPay cards. That means at times in some of the premium cards all the three versions are available to select from. At times two or just one.

Basic features of these cards remain the same but the additional features depend on the service provider. RuPay has cards for traveling, lifestyle, and premium cards. It has cards for online and offline shopping as well. More or less all big banks in India have done tie ups with RuPay.

Benefits of RuPay Credit Cards

RuPay has many benefits other than the usual features of the original card, that means there will be added features to whatever card you are using. For example, if you are using the RuPay version of HDFC Regalia, then this version will have the original features of Regalia and the facilities provided by RuPay making it even richer.

RuPay has maximum number of tie ups with other brands, some of the current discounts provided by RuPay are as follows:

  • TopTen: Up to 50% discount on mobile accessories.

How To Get a RuPay Credit Card?

Unfortunately, there is no perfect list of RuPay cards available in the market, as card companies have not provided an option on their web pages for the RuPay versions of their popular cards.

At the banks’ branches, there is a fair degree of confusion on what is on offer. Even the RuPay official website lists only a few of the cards available. Technically, most of the prominent banks’ cards including those of the HDFC Bank, SBI, Bank of Baroda cards, among others, are available in a RuPay version.

The easiest way to check for the RuPay version is to type the name of the credit card+RuPay version on any of the search engines and you’ll get a thorough list of all the articles, press releases, and reviews about the RuPay version and will confirm if it is available or not.

After confirming the above, if someone applies for a credit card online, they are supposed to get a call back. In that call from the banking entity, you will have to tell the agent that you need the RuPay version of the card, or you can visit the branch and apply for it manually.
