What Is Flying Blue?

Flying Blue is the loyalty program of Air France and KLM. It allows members to earn Flying Blue Miles and use them for rewards such as flights and upgrades. With a variable award pricing structure, prices for award tickets change based on the day of flying, route and day you search for a ticket.

This guide will focus on redeeming Flying Blue Miles for Promo reward flights at generous discounts. For a further understanding of the total Flying Blue program, be sure to read our guide to Air France-KLM Flying Blue.

Current Flying Blue Promo Rewards

Flying Blue Promo Rewards

Promo rewards from Flying Blue can save you up to 25% on award flights booked through Air France and KLM. The discount is only applied to the award mileage cost while taxes, fees and fuel surcharges will still be charged at normal rates. Promo rewards are subject to availability and are only bookable for a limited time, so you have to be quick to book.

How Often Are Rewards Updated?

Promo rewards change on a monthly basis. On the first weekday of each month, new Promo rewards are released for approximately 10 to 20 short-haul to medium-haul flights. A number of long-haul flights are made available each month, however they are not as common.

Promo rewards are available for dates within a three- to six-month window.

What Types of Flights Can I Book With Promo Awards?

You can book discounted award tickets for one-way or round-trip flights. Usually, you will find a wide array of short-haul and medium-haul flights available within Europe. However, long-haul flights are only available from select cities. If there are long-haul flights available, then they will be available to/from Europe’s many gateways unless a specific city (usually Paris or Amsterdam) is listed.

Dates, Routes and Availability

Each Promo reward has specific dates along with certain routes and airlines. Economy, premium economy and business awards are available, but not always for all of the route options. Note that finding availability when business class is discounted may be more difficult. Because there are a limited number of tickets at the promo rate, you’re more likely to nab Promo rewards tickets as soon as they’re released, particularly if it’s business class.

Promo rewards are valid for any eligible route between any two eligible cities. So, if you see a Promo reward for a route between Boston and Amsterdam, for example, you can book it in either direction, availability permitting. There is often plenty of availability, especially as new rewards are announced each month. However, you may need to dig a bit to find the right dates that will work for your schedule.

Positioning Flights

Promo rewards are typically designated between two specific cities, however others are between a departure city and region. It may be difficult to find a flight departing from your home airport. A good strategy to deploy is a positioning flight, which is a cheap one-way ticket to the departure airport of a long-haul reward.

For instance, let’s say you book an economy Promo reward ticket from Boston (BOS) to Amsterdam (AMS) at 25% off for 11,250 miles, but you are based in Chicago (ORD). As of writing, the lowest fare from Chicago would typically cost around 31,500 miles plus taxes and surcharges. With Promo rewards, you would save around 20,250 miles.

To “position” yourself, you would then find a cheap one-way ticket from Chicago to Boston. Just make sure you allow for plenty of time if things go wrong with your positioning flight. Depending on how much you would save, it may be worth scheduling your positioning flight a day early and using that day to explore your gateway city.

Cancellation Policy

Promo reward tickets can be canceled or changed for a fee of 50 euros. Changes or cancellations must be made before the latest check-in time. Tickets must be purchased through airfrance.us or klm.com. If you are booking minors traveling alone or if you are traveling with an infant under the age of two, then these bookings must be made by contacting Flying Blue customer service.

Lastly, when booking regular award tickets, you can use Cash & Miles, however up to 25% of the miles price can be paid in cash when booking Promo reward tickets.

Best Flying Blue Transfer Partners

All of the major transferable points credit card programs partner with Flying Blue. This means that Flying Blue Miles can be earned through credit card spending in many different programs.

Flying Blue’s major transfer partners are:

Transfer Bonus

Another way to make your miles go further is to combine a Promo reward with a transfer bonus. Occasionally, transfer bonus offers of up to 50% are available. They are limited in their duration and are announced at random times during the year.

For instance, let’s say there is a bonus offer of 25% for American Express Membership Rewards transfers to Flying Blue. On top of that, there is a Promo reward of 25% off flights between Paris (CDG) and Prague (PRG) that usually cost 20,000 miles in business class.

By combining the Amex transfer bonus with a promo award offer in the above example, you would only need to transfer 12,000 Membership Rewards to Flying Blue to book the Promo reward. The end result saves you 8,000 points, or 40% off the original award flight.
