What Is BambooHR?

BambooHR is a one-stop shop for all small to midsize businesses’ HR needs. The software solution allows HR managers to manage all aspects of an employee’s life cycle from hiring to onboarding to payroll to benefits to offboarding. It is easy to use, comes with plenty of built-in templates and provides well-organized, visually appealing workflows.

BambooHR’s main dashboard.

How BambooHR Works

BambooHR is an HRIS that houses a lot of features and tools to manage employee data and more, so it can be initially overwhelming when logging in. However, when you start clicking into its main features in the top menu, the system walks you through a series of steps or presents information in a way that’s easy to understand. You’ll find that a lot of key functions live in the “Settings” menu.

What Sets BambooHR Apart

BambooHR stands out for its ease of use. Plus, some features are especially worth calling out, such as automations, onboarding and other tools that help make life easier for employees, managers and one-person or small HR teams.

Ease of Use

BambooHR has a reputation for its ease of use and setup, and we can attest to that. We tried using most of BambooHR’s features and describe them in more detail below in the Features and Additional Features sections.

Automations

BambooHR’s automated approval workflows help you and your team members make decisions more quickly. It enables you to string a sequence of action steps for things such as promotions, time off requests and more. BambooHR includes quite a few built-in workflow approvals, so those are likely to cover what you need. Otherwise, you’ll have to upgrade to the Advantage plan to create your own workflows.

Offboarding

With so much focus on talent acquisition and retention, it’s easy to forget about offboarding, especially when HR software solutions don’t tend to include offboarding tools. Yet, offboarding is as critical as any other stage of the employee life cycle.

BambooHR makes sure you don’t forget about offboarding by dedicating a module to it, even though it looks just like the onboarding module. The point is that you’re more likely to remember to create checklists for offboarding.

Performance Management

BambooHR features your typical performance management capabilities, such as goal setting and progress monitoring. However, we like the Employee Performance Report that visually displays your workforce on a grid. This helps managers identify and reward high performers as well as identify and address potential performance issues.

Employee Satisfaction and Well-being

Companies are interested in retaining their people, and BambooHR responds directly to that need by providing robust employee satisfaction and well-being tools to gauge how employees are feeling at work. These insights are often a direct reflection of how the company as a whole is doing. Being able to measure employee sentiment and well-being empowers HR professionals to improve their organizational culture and employee retention.

BambooHR Features

BambooHR’s core features include an employee database, time-off management, automated approval workflows, an applicant tracking system and more.

Employee Data Management

BambooHR securely stores all employee data in one place. Plus, HR staff members don’t have to enter data more than once because the central database communicates with all other parts of the system, including third-party integrations. BambooHR also enables employee self-service, so there’s no need to reach out to someone in HR to enter or make changes to an employee’s data.

In the testing environment, we found it very easy to add an employee and update their information. When an employee or their manager makes a change to an employee’s profile, the administrator receives an email notification. When entering BambooHR through that notification, it displays what was changed, and you simply approve, deny or add a comment.

Benefits Tracking

BambooHR includes benefits tracking but offers benefits administration as an add-on.

Benefits tracking comes standard with BambooHR, so you can create, manage and assign employees to your benefits groups and packages, including Affordable Care Act (ACA) reporting, for your entire organization.

We tried this out ourselves, and the process was pretty straightforward. You create a new plan under the Benefits settings by giving it a name, assigning start and end dates and choosing a rate.

From there, you select coverage options, for example, employee and/or employee and children and define eligibility criteria. BambooHR will then automatically follow those criteria rules.

Then, you have to enter your payroll deduction rules as well as the monthly premiums that employees and the company pay.

Finally, you assign employees to the plan, set the effective date and select each employee’s chosen coverage type.

Benefits tracking is a suitable option for very small businesses that have basic benefits. However, this option involves a lot of manual entry, as it doesn’t enable employee self-enrollment. Plus, you may also have to manually calculate premium deductions from employee paychecks.

To save yourself the trouble, you might instead want to check out BambooHR’s benefits administration add-on.

Time-off Management

Employees can make a PTO request from their desktop or mobile device, and their manager gets notified automatically via email, the app and in their BambooHR inbox. BambooHR automatically calculates the number of vacation or sick time hours an employee has based on your company’s time-off policy. In fact, you can create multiple PTO policies for specific teams, departments or locations.

Upon receiving a PTO request, managers can view the schedule within BambooHR to check for time conflicts before approving or denying the request. Once a manager approves or denies, the employee receives a notification, and their time-off balance is updated.

On both the employee and manager side, and on a desktop as well as mobile device, it was easy for us to submit and respond to a time-off request. We especially thought it was helpful to see who else will be out at the same time. When we approved a time-off request from the admin side, we received an email and a push notification on mobile—from the employee perspective—that the request was approved.

Managers can view and act on time-off requests on a desktop or mobile device.

Approval Workflows

BambooHR enables automated workflows to expedite processes and help teams make decisions more quickly. The Essentials plan features built-in automated approval workflow templates for managing:

  • Employee information
  • Time-off requests
  • Compensation changes
  • An employee’s employment status
  • An employee’s job information
  • Promotions
  • Asset requests

With the Advantage plan, you can create customized workflows. When building your own workflow sequence, you can add up to five steps and assign each one to a specific person in your organization. When it’s their turn to complete a task in the workflow, they’ll receive an email notification.

In the test environment, it was easy to find the “Approvals” section under “Settings.” It was simple to add certain roles to a workflow and add or remove fields from an approval request form.

BambooHR’s includes some built-in approval workflows.

Applicant Tracking System

BambooHR’s applicant tracking system (available in the Advantage plan) features three main tabs for job openings, candidates and candidate pools. BambooHR has a separate mobile app, BambooHR Hiring, for managing the candidate pipeline.

Creating a New Job in BambooHR

To create a new job, BambooHR takes you through an easy, three-step process. First, you enter job information. To save time, we recommend copying an existing job opening and making adjustments where needed rather than typing or copying it in manually.

You then adjust application details by selecting the information and documents you want applicants to submit. You can even select and customize questions for an application.

Finally, you select the job boards you want to push your post to. The options we saw included Indeed, Glassdoor and ZipRecruiter. Once you save your post, you can also post to LinkedIn, Facebook and Twitter via a shareable link.

BambooHR takes you through a step-by-step process to create a job opening.

It’s worth noting that you cannot create a new job opening on BambooHR Hiring mobile app.

When applications start rolling in, you can view and annotate candidate profiles with notes and move a candidate along by changing their hiring status in their profile. You also can communicate with candidates at every step by email with the help of templates.

You can review candidates and view notes on a desktop or mobile device.

We also found it convenient that the system automatically adds the candidate as a new employee and archives the job opening when the candidate is marked as “Hired.”

Unfortunately, BambooHR currently doesn’t offer automatic candidate matching, and we couldn’t visualize where applicants stood at any given stage in the hiring process.

BambooHR provides a smooth transition from hiring to onboarding.

Candidate Database in BambooHR

Under job openings, the search capabilities were rather limited in both the browser version and mobile app, as we were able to apply filters to existing job openings by status only. However, we found a workaround in the browser interface by navigating to the candidate list where you get several more filtering options. Both job opening and candidate search capabilities are limited in the mobile app. The candidate pools section is only available in the browser version and enables you to add candidates who haven’t applied but who you think fit a particular job type at your company.

When testing BambooHR’s ATS, we found it easy to use overall. Though you have a lot of options, BambooHR leads you through the process, so you don’t get overwhelmed. The mobile app is a parsed-down version of the browser interface that’s perfect for quick status checks or changes as well as candidate rating and communication.

BambooHR’s candidate database search functions.

Onboarding and Offboarding

If you’re looking to follow best onboarding practices, you’re in luck with BambooHR. It’s ranked among our top onboarding software providers, particularly for its customizable preboarding and onboarding checklists. That way, new hires know what to expect on day one and have everything they need.

BambooHR facilitates easy onboarding, though it’s worth mentioning that onboarding features aren’t available on the mobile app. Once you mark a candidate as hired and add them as an employee, you’re directed to their profile to double-check and save their information in the database.

BambooHR allows you to customize new hire packets based on job type, department, locations and other factors. New hires can sign documents electronically before BambooHR securely stores them in one spot for easy access. Also, you can create internal task lists for teams or individuals to do before or after a new employee starts their job.

BambooHR enables customized onboarding checklists.

We tested the e-signature feature, in particular, on both the desktop and mobile devices, and it was somewhat difficult to use. Upon clicking the yellow arrow, it took us directly to the empty signature fields, but then kept taking us to the next field to fill in various information. The progress bar at the top did not change.

When it’s time to part ways with an employee, BambooHR ensures that the offboarding process is secure, compliant and thoughtful. The offboarding interface in your browser looks just like the one for onboarding. You can set up task lists to automate information security restrictions, delegate property collection tasks and ensure compliance. Offboarding is not available on BambooHR’s mobile app.

Employee Wellness

BambooHR helps you keep a finger on the pulse of employee sentiment towards their jobs and the company as a whole. It does this through a combination of Net Promoter Score surveys, pulse surveys and anonymous, open-ended feedback.

For the eNPS and open-ended feedback, you can determine keywords that BambooHR matches with employee feedback in order to detect recurring themes. After collecting feedback, BambooHR displays the most mentioned topics.

Additionally, on a more granular level, BambooHR’s Employee Wellbeing tool prompts each employee to answer preset questions by choosing from a six-point Likert scale and filling in an optional notes section. Questions can be sent automatically on a monthly, bimonthly or quarterly basis and cannot be customized.

Both employee satisfaction and well-being tools provide high-level insights to company leadership and HR who can then work together to identify initiatives that will help employees feel happier at work.

BambooHR’s Employee Wellbeing Analytics

With our trial account, we were only able to set up an Employee Satisfaction Introduction Email to distribute to employees. However, we had full access to the Employee Wellbeing feature.

Setting up an Employee Wellbeing survey involved setting a survey date, cadence and selecting four questions total. Each question targets four different dimensions of employee well-being: happiness, personal motivators, company motivators and relationships.

The employee satisfaction and well-being tools aren’t available on BambooHR’s mobile app.

Reporting and Analytics

Reporting tools are embedded into every part of the browser version of BambooHR, so you can run a report on basically any data it houses. BambooHR has dozens of standard reports available related to employee data, turnover, hiring, time off used and more.

BambooHR’s Employee Turnover Report

Under the Advantage plan, you can easily create your own report. We tried making our own “Turnover” report by navigating to the “Reports” tab, clicking the “New Report” button, giving it a title and selecting the relevant fields. Just hit “Save,” and it appears under “My Reports.”

BambooHR also displays visually appealing dashboards to notice patterns and get insights right away. Each user can customize their dashboard to their liking by arranging the widgets. We noticed that you cannot access reporting and analytics features through the mobile app.

BambooHR Pricing and Plans

Companies with 20 employees or fewer get charged a flat monthly rate, while companies with more than 20 employees pay on a per-employee per-month basis on top of the monthly rate. Volume discounts apply as your head count grows, meaning the cost per employee goes down as you add more people to your organization.

  • Payroll costs “$75 per month for 10 employees. Each additional employee is $4.25 per month.”
    • Payroll costs $150 per month for up to 20 employees. Starting with the 21st employee, we offer a discounted PEPM (per employee per month) price starting at $7.25 per employee. As EE count grows, the PEPM price goes down.

BambooHR offers two feature packages: Essentials or Advantage.

Essentials

The Essentials plan provides basic HR management features such as employee records, benefits tracking, standard reporting, document storage and employee self-service features including time-off management, a mobile app, an employee directory and more.

Advantage

In addition to all the features included in Essentials, the Advantage package also includes hiring and onboarding features such as an ATS, electronic signature, advanced custom reporting and audit trails to track data changes.

With the Advantage plan, you also get access to BambooHR’s Open API to build connections and share data with other systems in your tech stack. Otherwise, Bamboo Marketplace offers a variety of ready-made integrations with third-party apps. The Advantage plan also includes tools for employee engagement and satisfaction as well as access to customer support via chat and phone.

Add-ons

You can add these tools and services onto your Essentials or Advantage plan:

  • Payroll
  • Benefits administration
  • Performance management
  • Time tracking

Jump to the “Additional Features” section to learn more about these features.

BambooHR Customer Service and Support

Essentials plan customers can get customer support through BambooHR’s online resources or via email. Advantage plan customers get phone and chat support in addition.

Phone support is available Monday through Friday from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. Mountain time.

We reached out to customer support via chat from directly within the BambooHR interface. They responded right away and assisted us with setting a performance goal.

When implementing BambooHR, you must either go through Quick Start setup or BambooHR’s full implementation process. Quick Start is a self-directed setup process, while full implementation involves one-on-one training with a dedicated project manager over a four- to six-week period. The implementation route you take depends on the number of employees:

  • Up to 15 employees: Quick Start
  • 16 to 20 employees: Choice of Quick
  • Start or the full implementation process
  • 21-plus employees: Mandatory implementation

Additional BambooHR Features Worth Noting

BambooHR offers payroll, time tracking and other tools as add-ons.

Payroll

BambooHR’s payroll software for U.S.-based employees is an optional add-on available to all customers. It handles wages, hours, account numbers, benefits, deductions and withholdings automatically. You can set up flexible pay schedules, and BambooHR automatically calculates and files state and federal taxes to ensure your company remains compliant. However, if you’re ever in doubt, the payroll add-on includes direct access to BambooHR’s specialized payroll support team.

When testing out payroll, the only drawback we found is that manually editing or entering hours and special payment amounts, such as bonuses, before running payroll only prolongs the process.

If you choose the payroll, time tracking and benefits administration add-ons, they all sync real-time data, so you don’t have to worry about duplicate data entry.

On the employee side, BambooHR’s payroll is self-service, so employees can access pay stubs, add direct deposit accounts and more right from their mobile or desktop device without needing to reach out to someone in HR.

BambooHR also includes over 100 built-in, exportable payroll reports to help your company with budget planning and strategic payroll decisions.

BambooHR’s payroll costs $150 per month for up to 20 employees. Starting with the 21st employee, payroll costs an additional $7.25 per employee per month.

Benefits Administration

In contrast to BambooHR’s standard benefits tracking feature, benefits administration automates the process of managing employee benefits and allows employee self-service to simplify enrollment. It automatically reminds employees about open enrollment and syncs with payroll (if you choose that add-on too). Once employees choose their benefits, you just have to transfer that information over to your broker or carriers electronically—this doesn’t necessarily happen automatically. You can do this through data export, a PDF form builder or through automated carrier connections available with some benefit providers.

BambooHR’s benefits administration add-on also comes with comprehensive reporting, so you can see how many employees are enrolled in which benefits, who still needs to enroll and other important data points that influence your benefits strategy.

BambooHR’s benefits administration add-on costs $5 per employee per month before volume and industry discounts.

Time Tracking

BambooHR’s time tracking add-on enables employees to easily clock in and out, edit their hours and track their time for projects all from the mobile app. Managers can then approve timesheets from the app as well. BambooHR sends automatic reminders to employees and managers to ensure hours are entered in time for the next payroll run. BambooHR also automatically calculates overtime for all 50 U.S. states and features a Payroll Hours Report to display general, overtime and PTO hours for each pay period.

BambooHR’s time-tracking add-on costs $3 per employee per month. Volume discounts apply, so as you add more employees, your cost per employee per month for this add-on will decrease.

Performance Management

BambooHR’s performance management add-on includes:

  • Self- and manager assessment
  • 360 feedback
  • Goal setting
  • Automated reminders
  • Performance reports

BambooHR facilitates performance feedback through employee self-assessment, manager assessment and 360 feedback. Self-assessments and manager assessments ensure that a manager and their employees are on the same page about job expectations and performance by allowing them to compare notes and address any discrepancies.

Assessment questions are customizable based on the position or department. BambooHR also enables managers to collect feedback from a variety of people the employee works with to get a more holistic view of their performance.

You can set up to four review cycles within a one-year period that fit your company’s needs, whether annually, quarterly, semiannually or on a more frequent basis. You can even set up 30-, 60- and 90-day check-ins with new hires to ensure they’re on track and feeling supported in their new role. It was easy for us to set up a review cycle by giving it a name, choosing who should participate and setting the review and reminder schedules.

Regardless of how you configure your review schedule, BambooHR will send automated reminders to employees with links to their assessments. Managers can track their employees’ review progress in their main dashboard.

Individuals, teams and departments can also set and track goal progress in BambooHR. Each goal displays a running completion of a goal in the form of a percentage. Executives can oversee company-wide goals in the Goal Status report, while managers can monitor their team’s goal progress. BambooHR pushes automated reminders and notifications to keep everyone abreast of goal progress.

In BambooHR’s performance management software, you can get an overview of your employees’ progress toward their goals.

When trying the goal-setting feature out, we were also able to configure which departments and teams should set goals. To set your own performance goal, first make sure your own profile isn’t filtered out of the goal-setting feature, as that caused some confusion for us in the trial. Then, simply state your objective, the due date and milestones to achieve along the way. BambooHR displays your goal progress as a percentage, based on how many milestone activities you complete.

The Employee Performance Report visually displays an employee’s performance in a plot chart where one axis shows engagement, and the other axis shows how valuable their contribution is. The chart plots employees on the graph in relation to how their managers answer two standard questions about their performance in the manager assessment. Viewing employees on a grid such as this makes it easier for managers to spot and address potential issues early on.

BambooHR visualizes employees’ performance in the Employee Performance Report.

On a broader level, BambooHR provides a Company Performance Report geared towards executives and HR who can use this report to identify and work together on potential organizational issues such as ensuring high performers are properly recognized and compensated.

You can do all this and more on a desktop device or on BambooHR’s mobile app.

The Company Performance Report provides high-level insights on your company’s culture.

BambooHR’s performance management add-on costs $5.25 per employee per month. Volume discounts apply, so as you add more employees, your cost per employee per month for this add-on will decrease.

BambooHR vs. ADP Workforce Now

ADP is a strong contender in the payroll space, so its inclusion of payroll into all three of its plans puts it at an advantage over BambooHR where payroll is an add-on. However, reporting tools come standard with BambooHR, and customers have a variety of ways of getting in touch with BambooHR’s customer support.

ADP Workforce Now is more popular for midsized to large businesses, and ADP’s array of products support a business’s HR needs throughout the business life cycle. BambooHR, by contrast, serves the small to midsized client base and doesn’t offer a product for larger enterprise businesses that outgrow BambooHR’s tools and capacities.

However, in user ratings, BambooHR on the whole fares better in user-friendliness, onboarding and performance management features than ADP Workforce Now. Interestingly, for very small businesses and small to midsized businesses, BambooHR earns higher payroll software ratings.

BambooHR vs. Namely

BambooHR’s and Namely’s feature packaging are somewhat mirror opposites of each other.

While performance management, employee engagement and onboarding are ancillary features that BambooHR provides as an add-on or in the Advantage plan, these features are included in Namely’s base offering. However, Namely’s employee engagement features are limited to employee recognition and an interactive company news feed.

Conversely, Namely’s mid-tier plan, HR Complete, includes many of the cornerstone HR software solutions that BambooHR offers as an add-on, such as payroll, time tracking and benefits administration. This may offer more cost savings to Namely’s customers by bundling these features together, but offering it as an add-on means all BambooHR customers have the option of using those features.

Namely’s packaging approach offers very basic and ancillary features together but requires customers to upgrade to gain access to the most common HR software tools such as payroll and benefits administration. BambooHR also offers basic HRIS features to start but splits up the cornerstone and ancillary features as either an add-on or a feature available in the upgraded plan.

User ratings reveal that BambooHR scores better than Namely in terms of ease of use, setup, customer support and HR software functions on the whole. However, Namely’s reviews tend to rate some of its performance management and onboarding features more highly than BambooHR’s reviews.

BambooHR vs. Zenefits

The core of both BambooHR and Zenefits are quite similar, yet Zenefits offers certain features that BambooHR does not, namely compensation management and predictive analytics.

Zenefits also takes a more graduated packaging approach by offering two additional price tiers beyond its baseline plan. Having three, rather than just two plan options, might be more suitable for growing companies that want more flexibility in how they bundle features. Zenefits indeed tends to serve the very small and small business customer segments, while BambooHR is more popular among small and midsized businesses.

On the whole, BambooHR has received higher ratings for its ease of use, setup and customer support, while Zenefits’ payroll, benefits administration and performance management features earn higher ratings than those of BambooHR. Though, among very small businesses of 50 or fewer people, the ratings tip in favor of BambooHR’s payroll and performance management software.

Is BambooHR Right for Me?

BambooHR is a great tool for small to medium-sized businesses (SMBs) whose HR departments have outgrown simple spreadsheets and paper files. HR personnel, recruiting teams and managers looking for an easy-to-use, all-in-one HR software suite will be satisfied with BambooHR.

BambooHR Is Best For:

  • Small to midsized companies
  • User-friendliness
  • Centralized data management
  • Automation of core HR tasks and workflows
  • Companies that need a variety of built-in reports
  • Companies that already have a payroll, benefits and time tracking solution in place
  • Collaborative hiring

BambooHR Is Not Recommended For:

  • Companies that want the cornerstone HR solutions, such as payroll, bundled in
  • Companies with high hiring volume that need automated candidate sourcing and matching

Our Expert Opinion

Ease of Use

We tested BambooHR on a Google Chrome browser on a Windows laptop and tested the mobile app on an Android mobile device. We didn’t come across any complaints about the app from iOS users in reviews.

The interface is straightforward, especially on the mobile app, displaying intuitive symbols such as plus signs to add widgets and create new elements.

While some widgets are clickable or provide a clickable action item, others, including “Training” and “Benefits” aren’t clickable, so you have to find and navigate to those respective sections of the system in the main menu.

In both the browser version and the app, the information is clustered under various tabs in the main menu. The “My Info” tab, for example, shows your employee profile overview that’s organized into sub-tabs containing personal information, benefits elections and more.

Outside of employee data, hiring, reports and files, several key functions of BambooHR are housed under the “Settings” menu on the browser app, which is somewhat counterintuitive but prevents the interface from getting too cluttered. Interestingly, BambooHR Hiring is a separate mobile app entirely. Navigating between the two apps might be slightly inconvenient for in-house hiring staff who need to use both.

Setup

When setting up BambooHR for the first time, you can migrate data from another HRIS to populate standard reports and the widgets on the home screen, such as total head count and turnover. This is the preferred way to get set up with BambooHR because, otherwise, when starting from scratch, the home screen is filled with empty modules, and you have to customize the interface manually, which can be quite time-consuming.

That being said, though it’s time-consuming, the home screen is easy to customize. Simply add, remove, drag and drop widgets on the home screen to see the metrics that matter most to you.
