About AARP Car Insurance

The AARP Car Insurance Program is offered through The Hartford. Since 1984, The Hartford has been selling auto insurance exclusively to AARP members who are age 50 and older. The Hartford has an A+ financial strength rating from AM Best.

AARP Car Insurance

AARP provides all the core types of car insurance.

Liability Car Insurance

Liability insurance pays for others’ injuries and property damage if you cause an accident. If you get sued, it also pays for your legal defense and any settlements and judgments, up to your policy limit. There are minimum liability insurance requirements in most states, but you can buy more.

Comprehensive Insurance

Comprehensive insurance pays to replace or repair your vehicle if it’s totaled or damaged due to problems such as fire, floods, severe weather, theft, vandalism, falling objects and collisions with animals. The maximum payout for comprehensive insurance is the actual cash value of your vehicle if it’s totaled, minus your deductible.

Collision Insurance

Collision insurance pays to replace or repair your vehicle after a crash into an object, such as another car or a building. The maximum payout for collision insurance is the value of your car if it’s totaled, minus the deductible.

Collision and comprehensive insurance are optional coverage types that are usually sold together. If you have a lease or loan, your leasing company or lender will most likely require you purchase them.

Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist Insurance

Uninsured/underinsured motorist insurance pays for your medical bills if you get into an accident with a driver who does not have insurance or does not have enough coverage to pay for your losses in full. These coverages also extend to family members and passengers riding in your car at the time of the crash. Uninsured/underinsured motorist insurance is required in some states and is optional in others.

Personal Injury Protection (PIP)

PIP insurance is typically required in no-fault states and optional in others. It pays for your medical expenses after an accident, regardless of which driver caused the crash.

Medical Payments Insurance

Medical payments (MedPay) coverage reimburses medical expenses if you, a family member or a passenger in your vehicle gets injured in a collision. It can cover costs for an ambulance ride, emergency room care, hospitalization, surgery, X-rays and rehabilitation, up to the policy limit.

What Does AARP Car Insurance Cover?

AARP car insurance offers accident forgiveness, new car replacement and gap insurance, but you’ll have to look elsewhere if you want pay-per-mile or rideshare insurance.

Does AARP Car Insurance Offer Accident Forgiveness?

AARP offers accident forgiveness as an endorsement. To get this, all drivers on your car insurance policy must have a clean driving record for at least five years before you can qualify for accident forgiveness. This add-on waives your first at-fault accident, so it raises your car insurance rates.

Accident forgiveness is not available to drivers in California.

Does AARP Car Insurance Offer New Car Replacement?

You can add new car replacement insurance to AARP car insurance for an added fee. If your car is totaled in an accident covered by your policy, new car replacement insurance will reimburse you for the cost of a new vehicle, similar to the make and model of your old one. Unlike a standard collision or comprehensive insurance policy, new car replacement coverage provides a payout that does not include a deduction for depreciation.

Does AARP Car Insurance Offer Gap Insurance?

Gap insurance is available as an endorsement through AARP/The Hartford. Gap insurance is often required if you lease or finance your vehicle. Gap insurance, sometimes called loan/lease coverage, covers the difference between what you owe on your car loan or lease and the value of your totaled or stolen vehicle. If you don’t have gap insurance and the outstanding balance of your loan or lease is more than your car’s value, you’ll be responsible for paying off the rest of the loan yourself.

Does AARP Car Insurance Offer a Diminishing Deductible?

AARP car insurance customers can take advantage of a diminishing deductible. This optional benefit can lower your collision insurance deductible when you maintain a clean driving record. However, a disappearing deductible from AARP is not available in all states.

Diminishing deductibles are not available to policyholders in California.

Does AARP Offer Usage-Based Insurance?

AARP/The Hartford offers a usage-based auto insurance program called TrueLane by The Hartford. It’s a smartphone app that tracks driving behaviors and rewards drivers with a discounted premium for demonstrating safe habits behind the wheel. You can get an automatic discount of up to 12% for enrolling and an additional maximum discount of 25% when you renew your policy.

Does AARP Offer Pay-Per-Mile Insurance?

You can’t purchase a pay-per-mile insurance policy through AARP. These policies are designed to help infrequent drivers get more affordable auto insurance. Rather than paying a fixed monthly premium, drivers who have pay-per-mile insurance install a device in their vehicle or use an app that tracks the number of miles they drive. This information is sent to the insurance company, which charges the driver based on the distance they drove during the payment period.

Does AARP Offer Rideshare Insurance?

AARP does not offer rideshare insurance. If you drive for a rideshare company, like Uber or Lyft, you might need to purchase a car insurance policy with rideshare insurance elsewhere. Your personal car insurance policy may not provide adequate coverage when you are driving for a rideshare service.

Does AARP Offer Roadside Assistance?

AARP auto insurance offers roadside assistance coverage. The base plan costs $60 for the first year of coverage, with the AARP member 10% discount. It includes two service calls a year for a single person or three for a couple. Services include battery charges, flat-tire fixes, fuel delivery, lock out assistance and towing, which has a 10-mile limit.

AARP Auto Insurance Discounts

AARP offers a wide variety of car insurance discounts. The following discounts are available but note that some discounts are not available in all states.
