About Clearcover Car Insurance

Clearcover launched in 2018 in California. One of its investors is American Family Ventures, the investment arm of American Family Insurance.

Clearcover sells only six-month car insurance policies. The company believes that it can provide the most accurate pricing by evaluating your driving record twice a year rather than annually. This also means that if you cause an accident or get a speeding ticket, you’ll pay an increased rate sooner.

Clearcover sells car insurance in 19 states:

Clearcover Car Insurance

Clearcover offers all the typical car insurance coverage types that drivers will find at other car insurance companies.

Liability Car Insurance

Liability auto insurance pays the medical expenses for other people’s injuries and property damage in an accident that you cause. It also covers your legal expenses if someone sues you over a car accident.

Comprehensive Car Insurance

Comprehensive insurance pays to repair or replace your car if damaged by a problem such as fire, vandalism, flooding, falling objects, hail or animal collisions. It also pays out if your car is stolen.

Collision Car Insurance

Collision insurance pays to repair or replace your car when it’s been damaged in an accident, regardless of fault. Collision car insurance also pays for your car’s damage if you hit an object (such as a fence or tree).

Comprehensive and collision insurance are optional and often sold together. If you have a car loan or lease, your lender or leasing company will likely require you to buy them.

Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist Insurance

Uninsured motorist coverage pays for your medical bills if a driver who doesn’t have liability insurance causes an accident that injures you or your passengers. Underinsured motorist coverage pays for you and your passengers’ medical bills if you are hit by a driver who does not have enough liability insurance. Uninsured motorist coverage is required in 22 states and optional in other states.

Personal Injury Protection (PIP)

PIP coverage pays for medical bills and other health care costs if you or your passengers are injured in an accident, regardless of who’s at fault. It also covers funeral expenses, lost wages, and pays for basic services such as child care. Personal injury protection insurance is required in 15 states, optional in other states and unavailable in some.

Medical Payments Insurance (MedPay)

Medical payments coverage (MedPay) pays for medical expenses for injuries to you and your passengers, no matter who’s at fault for the accident. It’s required in some states and optional in others. MedPay is usually sold in small amounts between $1,000 and $5,000.

Other Coverage Types From Clearcover Car Insurance

You can buy additional coverage to pay for other types of problems, such as rental reimbursement insurance if your car is in the shop or roadside service if your car is disabled:

  • Alternate transportation coverage kicks in if you’re unable to drive your car due to an incident covered by your policy. Under this coverage, you receive money for carpooling, rideshare services, public transit or rental cars. There’s a per day and per incident maximum. For example, if you buy $30/$900 alternate transportation coverage, Clearcover will pay $30 per day, up to $900 per incident, for alternate transportation.
  • Roadside assistance service will tow your car to the nearest qualified repair shop if your vehicle breaks down. Clearcover’s roadside assistance insurance covers up to three automotive emergencies for each six-month policy period. Those emergencies can include battery failures, flat tires or mechanical breakdowns.

Auto Insurance Complaints Against Clearcover

Clearcover car insurance has complaint levels that are more than three times the industry average. The most common type of complaint against Clearcover is about canceled policies. Other complaints include policy nonrenewal, adjuster handling, unsatisfactory settlement/offer and delays.

Clearcover Car Insurance Discounts

Unlike many other car insurance companies, Clearcover doesn’t offer an array of car insurance discounts. Rather, it says it builds discounts into its regular pricing. Clearcover does, however, offer a 15% discount for active duty military personnel. It offers an additional 25% discount for Louisiana drivers who are on active duty, as well as for their children under age 25.
