Required Minimum Wyoming Car Insurance

Car owners in Wyoming must buy car liability insurance. If you cause a car accident, this coverage pays for damages and injuries you do to others. Liability insurance also pays for your legal defense if someone sues you because of a car accident.

Car owners in Wyoming must buy liability with at least:

  • $25,000 for bodily injury to one person
  • $50,000 for bodily injury to multiple people in one accident
  • $20,000 for damage to property in one accident

You’ll often see this written as 25/50/20.

It’s a good idea to purchase more than the minimum amount of liability insurance. If you cause an accident with multiple injuries, medical bills could exhaust the minimum limits and you could be sued for the rest. We recommend you buy enough liability to cover your assets, like your house and savings.

What Other Wyoming Auto Insurance Types Should I Have?

Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist Insurance. If you’re in a car accident with someone who doesn’t carry liability insurance, uninsured motorist insurance (UM) pays for your medical expenses. Underinsured motorist insurance (UIM) pays for your medical expenses when you’re hit by a driver who doesn’t carry enough liability insurance.

Car insurance companies in Wyoming must offer you UM and UIM, but you can reject them in writing. Generally, this is a good coverage to have.

Medical Payments (MedPay). This covers medical and funeral expenses for you and your passengers no matter who is at fault for the car accident.

Collision and comprehensive insurance. If you want coverage for your car, collision and comprehensive insurance cover a range of problems, including car accidents, car theft, vandalism, hail, floods, fire, collisions with animals and falling objects.

If you have a loan or a lease, your lender or leasing company will most likely require you to carry collision and comprehensive insurance.
