Our Verdict

Our Verdict

With its $395 annual fee and high-level travel benefits, the Capital One Venture X Business* card might not appeal to small businesses operating on a shoestring. But it’s a particularly good fit for companies where multiple employees need a company card since every dollar spent earns two miles. It may also be the right card for companies who already invest in airport lounge access since cardholders receive a complimentary PriorityPass Lounge membership.

It is important to note, though, that this is a charge card, which means the balance must be paid in full every month, or your account will be considered past due. For businesses with inconsistent cash flow, you may prefer a more traditional credit card.

Introducing Capital One Venture X Business

With its $395 annual fee and the requirement to pay your balance in full every month, the Capital One Venture X Business* card isn’t for everyone. However, if its travel-related benefits—including an unlimited Priority Pass ($469 value, free for the primary cardholder and up to two guests), up to $100 statement credit for a TSA PreCheck or Global Entry application fee and approximately $400 value in anniversary bonus and travel credits—may prove worthwhile for the right business. However, if you don’t normally purchase these perks, you’ll need to charge about $20,000 to cover the annual fee in rewards alone.

The Capital One Venture X Business* card offers a solid earn rate of 2 miles per dollar spent, which can be redeemed for a variety of travel options. You’ll also earn more on most travel purchases made through Capital One Travel—5 miles per dollar on flights and 10 miles per dollar on hotels and rental cars.

One of this card’s best features is the ability to transfer your accrued miles to more than 15 branded travel loyalty programs with no restrictions or blackout dates. You also receive free employee cards and virtual cards, dedicated business-specific customer support, easy integration with business-friendly platforms like QuickBooks and more.

What Is the Capital One Venture X Business Best For?

The Venture X Business* card is best for business owners who value travel benefits and would otherwise pay for these perks and/or value them at greater than the cost of the annual fee. The Venture X Business* also offers strong earnings on everyday spending, but the large welcome bonus requires a high level of spending—meaning it won’t be attainable for all businesses. If you won’t hit the spending threshold with normal spending, you may want to consider another of these top business cards.

Capital One Venture X Business Rewards

Earning Rewards

The Capital One Venture X Business* card’s full suite of rewards is so extensive that it can almost feel overwhelming, but the actual earning and redemption options are pretty straightforward. You earn 10 miles per dollar on hotels and rental cars booked via Capital One Travel, 5 miles per dollar on flights booked via Capital One Travel and 2 miles per dollar on other eligible purchases.

This card offers 150,000 bonus miles after spending $30,000 in the first three months of account opening and an annual retention bonus: 10,000 miles (equivalent to a $100 travel credit) plus another $300 travel portal credit through Capital One Travel on your account anniversary.

Redeeming Rewards

The Capital One Venture X Business* card stands out for its ability to transfer your rewards miles to more than a dozen branded loyalty programs. You won’t find every rewards program here, but you do have plenty of choices, including Choice Privileges, Wyndham Rewards, Emirates Skywards, Virgin Flying Club, Air Canada Aeroplan and British Airways Avios.

Rewards can be redeemed through the Capital One Travel portal for a variety of travel purchases, including hotels, flights and more, with no date restrictions. You can also redeem your rewards miles for a statement credit against travel purchases made within the last 90 days.

Rewards Potential

Forbes uses data from various government agencies in order to determine both baseline income and spending averages across various categories. We estimate that an average business charges $39,337 to a credit card each year, resulting in 129,022 miles if all qualifying travel is booked through Capital One Travel.

How the Capital One Venture X Business Review Stacks Up

Venture X Business* vs. Spark Cash Select from Capital One*

If you enjoy the business-management benefits Capital One offers—including free employee cards with adjustable spend limits, account managers, and transparency about recurring transactions—but don’t want to pay an annual fee, consider the Spark Cash Select from Capital One*. Spark cards come in several tiers, but this one stands out for offering a similar range of card-management options, 1.5% cash back on every purchase and 5% cash back on hotels and rental cars booked through Capital One Travel, and a welcome bonus of $750 cash bonus after spending $6,000 in the first 3 months of account opening.

You also get a comprehensive suite of the aforementioned business tools and no foreign transaction fee—plus the ability to carry a balance from month to month when needed. The Venture X Business* card, by comparison, must be paid in full every month.

With that said, frequent travelers who appreciate a bit of luxury may still find the Capital One Venture X Business* card’s $395 annual fee worth it for the more comprehensive travel benefits. The complimentary PriorityPass membership alone is enough to cover the cost of the annual fee. Add in the annual travel bonuses and the ability to transfer your accrued awards miles to a variety of loyalty programs, and it’s hard to beat the Venture X Business* in terms of travel awards.

Venture X Business* vs. Ink Business Unlimited® Credit Card

If you’re looking for a reasonable business rewards card that doesn’t charge an annual fee and won’t pull a lot of focus from other business affairs, consider the Ink Business Unlimited® Credit Card from Chase. It offers the convenience of a rewards program with 1.5% cash back rewards on every business purchase and is our top pick among business cards. It also comes with an APR offer: 0% introductory APR for 12 months on purchases, then a 18.49% - 24.49% variable APR applies for purchases and balance transfers. A balance transfer fee of either $5 or 5% of the amount of each transfer, whichever is greater, applies, and a welcome bonus of $750 bonus cash back after spending $6,000 on purchases in the first 3 months from account opening.

The Ink Business Unlimited® Credit Card offers you the chance to redeem your rewards for travel purchases through Chase Ultimate Rewards®, one of the most flexible rewards programs available. But if you get a lot of value from travel-specific awards, the Capital One Venture X Business* card’s impressive travel perks will more than pay for the card’s annual fee—if you use them.

Likewise, if you’re a frequent international traveler, the Capital One Venture X Business* card works to your benefit because it has no foreign transaction fee, whereas the Ink Business Unlimited charges a hefty foreign transaction fee: 3% of each transaction in U.S. dollars.

Venture X Business* vs. The Blue Business® Plus Credit Card from American Express

If the Capital One Venture X Business card’s $395 annual fee is a dealbreaker for you, consider The Blue Business® Plus Credit Card from American Express (Terms apply, see rates & fees), which offers 2 Membership Rewards points per dollar on everyday business purchases such as office supplies or client dinners up to the first $50,000 in purchases per year, then 1 point per dollar on all other purchases and has no annual fee.

However, The Blue Business® Plus Credit Card from American Express offers 2 Membership Rewards points per dollar on everyday business purchases such as office supplies or client dinners up to the first $50,000 in purchases per year, then 1 point per dollar on all other purchases. If you’re planning to charge more than $50,000 to your card every year, you’re better off either getting the Capital One Venture X Business* card—which has no rewards cap—or using The Blue Business® Plus Credit Card from American Express for the first $50,000 in spending, then switching to another card that offers a rewards boost.

With both cards, you can transfer your earned miles to a variety of travel loyalty programs—but with The Blue Business® Plus Credit Card from American Express, you’re charged a fee for doing so. It also charges a foreign transaction fee, which the Venture X Business* card does not. And the Venture X Business* offers a much more expansive suite of travel perks, like its complimentary Priority Pass membership. Because of that, frequent international travelers—or those who do a lot of domestic travel and appreciate the luxury of a good lounge membership—may prefer the Venture X Business*.

With all that said, The Blue Business® Plus Credit Card from American Express allows you to carry a month-to-month balance, which the Capital One Venture X Business* does not. So if you want the freedom to use a more conventional credit card—or if you stick primarily to domestic travel and plan to charge less than $50,000 in a calendar year—The Blue Business® Plus Credit Card from American Express and its no annual fee suddenly become very attractive. It also offers a 0% intro APR on purchases for 12 months from the date of account opening, then a variable rate of 18.49% - 26.49% applies.

Is the Capital One Venture X Business for You?

If you can pay your balance in full every month and would be paying for at least some of the Capital One Venture X Business* card’s biggest travel perks anyway—or if you’re a high spender who really wants flexible travel rewards—it’s hard to find a more valuable travel rewards card for a business.

However, if you’re loyal to one air carrier, hotel or travel program, you might prefer a co-branded card that funnels all your purchasing power directly to that carrier’s loyalty program, as many have lower annual fees than the Capital One Venture X Business* card.
