Our Verdict

Our Verdict

The Gap Good Rewards Mastercard®* can earn significant rewards at Gap-branded stores, Old Navy-branded stores, Athleta and Banana Republic. But while it can be used everywhere Mastercard is accepted, even committed brand shoppers would be better served by cards with more flexible rewards.

How the Gap Good Rewards Credit Card Stacks Up

Gap Good Rewards Mastercard®* vs. Wells Fargo Active Cash® Card

The Wells Fargo Active Cash® Card earns 2% cash rewards on purchases, making it a much more rewarding option. The card also offers a 0% intro APR for 15 months from account opening on purchases and qualifying balance transfers, then a 20.24%, 25.24%, or 29.99% variable APR applies. Balance transfers made within 120 days qualify for the intro rate and fee of 3% then a fee of up to 5%, with a minimum of $5 applies and a welcome bonus. You can earn $200 cash rewards bonus after spending $500 in purchases in the first 3 months. Plus, the card offers the ever valuable cellphone protection, which the Gap Good Rewards Mastercard®* does not.

With simple, easy to redeem rewards, a flat-rate cash rewards card like this one will likely provide more value for the majority of consumers. If we assume the same spending, you could earn approximately $724 each year, plus the welcome bonus your first year if you qualify.

Gap Good Rewards Mastercard®* vs. Amazon Prime Rewards Visa Signature Card*

As store cards go, the Gap Good Rewards Mastercard®* won’t compete with those cards on our list of the best store cards, which includes the Amazon Prime Rewards Visa Signature Card*. This store-branded card earns 5% cash back in rewards at Amazon.com and Whole Foods Market with an eligible Prime membership, 5% back on Chase Travel purchases, 2% cash back at restaurants, gas stations, drugstores, and local transit and commuting and 1% on all other purchases. Get 10% back or more in bonus rewards on rotating categories and products sold on Amazon.com. It also lives up to the “There’s more to Prime…” motto with its truckload of travel benefits, such as an auto collision damage waiver, lost luggage reimbursement, baggage delay insurance, travel accident insurance and more.

Though it charges no additional annual fee, the Amazon Prime Rewards Visa Signature Card* requires Prime membership, which costs $139 per year. For those who shop with Amazon or at Whole Foods, the Amazon Prime Rewards Visa Signature Card* provides significant benefits and can be used anywhere Visa is accepted.

Gap Good Rewards Mastercard®* vs. Verizon Visa® Card*

Similar to the Amazon Visa, you must be a Verizon customer to hold the Verizon Visa® Card*. The card has no annual fee and offers 4% back in rewards per dollar spent on groceries and gas, 3% on dining and takeout, 2% on Verizon purchases and 1% on all other purchases. Plus you’ll earn $150 credit applied to your credit card bill after making a purchase in the first 90 days.

Whether or not this card will be a better fit than the Gap card, or a good fit at all, depends on your spending habits. If you are a Verizon customer, this card may be worth a look.

Is the Gap Good Rewards Mastercard® for You?

The Gap Good Rewards Mastercard®* only makes sense for those who spend plentifully within the Gap Inc. family of brands each year. Even then, it’s likely better paired with a card capable of offering broader rewards. Carefully consider the effects an additional account may have on your credit before applying for closed-loop store cards lacking major benefits and more favorable APRs.
