Trupanion offers an accident and illness pet insurance plan but not an accident-only plan.  You can also purchase add-ons to cover expenses such as burial or cremation costs, behavioral modification and physical therapy. Trupanion does not offer a wellness plan for routine exams and preventative care.

Accident and Illness Coverage

Trupanion offers coverage for unexpected illnesses and injuries under one comprehensive plan. It covers problems such as:

• Injuries such as a broken tooth or fractured bone
• Illnesses such as vomiting or diarrhea
• Hereditary conditions such as thyroid disease, upper respiratory infections, and elbow and hip dysplasia
• Congenital conditions such as heart disease, liver disease, nervous system issues and cataracts
• Surgeries
• Lab and diagnostic testing
• Hospitalizations
• Prescription medications
• Veterinary supplements
• Herbal therapy
• Lacerations

Trupanion Pet insurance Add-Ons

You can add the following benefits to a Trupanion plan at extra cost:

The Pet Owner Assistance Package. This helps pay for expenses outside of veterinary costs, including:

• Boarding fees if you are hospitalized
• Advertising and rewards for lost pets
• Liability coverage if your pet damages someone else’s property
• Vacation cancellation costs if you cancel your trip because your pet is ill or injured
• Burial or cremation costs if your pet dies due to an accident

The Recovery and Complementary Care Rider. This add-on covers non-clinical procedures, including:

• Acupuncture
• Chiropractic care
• Behavioral modification
• Physical therapy
• Homeopathy
• Hydrotherapy
• Rehabilitation therapy
• Naturopathy

Just like other pet insurers, Trupanion applies exclusions to a policy, such as:

• Pre-existing conditions that happen before coverage starts
• Wellness care such as vaccinations, routine check-ups, or flea and tick prevention
• Accident and illness vet exam fees
• Sales tax if it applies to where you live

Pet insurance companies typically have what’s called a waiting period, which is the amount of time before your coverage begins to reimburse you for vet costs. After your waiting period expires, your pet insurance coverage will kick in. Trupanion has the following waiting periods:

• 5 days for accidents
• 30 days for illness

Trupanion pet insurance does not have an extended waiting period for problems such as hip dysplasia or cruciate ligament issues.

Some pet insurance policies cap the amount they will reimburse you in a given year. Trupanion has only one coverage limit:

Deductible Options

Before your coverage begins reimbursing you, you must pay a set amount toward vet costs, also known as the deductible. Trupanion offers deductibles from $0 to $1,000.

Reimbursement Options

After paying your deductible, your pet insurance company will reimburse you for vet costs up to a certain percentage, known as the reimbursement level. Trupanion has one reimbursement level: 90%.

Small dogs are usually the least expensive for pet insurance.
