A balance transfer card can be a powerful tool to help you save money. Instead of siphoning away a large part of your payment toward interest, this card puts more of your hard-earned cash toward paying down the principal balance. If you’re a business owner looking for one of these cards for your business, know there aren’t many options.

Keep in mind: Although you’ll be paying 0% interest for a limited time with a balance transfer credit card, you will likely have to pay a balance transfer fee—a percent of the amount being transferred. This fee is likely less than the purchase APR on your credit card and will thus save you money in the long run.

Can You do a Balance Transfer on a Business Credit Card?

Yes, you can do a balance transfer on a business credit card. Balance transfers on business credit cards work much the same as the ones on personal cards. Once you have found the right business card for your needs, all you have to do is apply for the card. During the application process you can select to transfer a balance, or you can make the balance transfer after opening the account.

Keep in mind you won’t know what credit limit you’ll receive on the new card until after you’re approved and it may not meet the total amount you’re looking to transfer. When you shift debt to your new card, also be mindful that any balance transfer fees will also be charged to your new card. For example, if you’re approved for a $10,000 credit limit on a card with a 2% balance transfer fee, your balance on the new card will be $10,200.

How Do Balance Transfer Business Credit Cards Work?

Balance transfer business credit cards work just like any other business credit card, but offer a low or no APR intro period to help you pay off your existing debt faster. Keep in mind that, with most business credit cards, you provide a personal guarantee when you apply using your Social Security number, so you will be personally liable for any debt incurred with that business credit card.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Is it a good idea to do a balance transfer?

Doing a balance transfer can be a good idea if you can save on interest by leveraging a 0% APR period on a new credit card. It’s worthwhile to look at the debt you have, what interest rate you are currently paying on your debt and compare that with how much it would cost you in fees to transfer the debt to a card with a 0% APR period. Calculate the interest you would pay over the course of the 0% period with your current balance and compare it to the fee. Fortunately, Forbes Advisor has created a balance transfer calculator to help with your analysis.

What is the interest rate for a balance transfer?

Interest rates for balance transfers vary, but it’s possible to find credit cards—both personal and business—offering an introductory 0% APR on balance transfers. After the promotional period expires, your card’s variable APR will apply. You can find the balance transfer interest rate on the ongoing interest rate for your credit card on your card’s rates and fees sheet, which is also known as a Schumer Box.

Which bank offers the best business credit cards for balance transfers?

Not many banks offer a business credit card for balance transfers. U.S. Bank offers many of our top choices for business balance transfer credit cards.
