More About the Best Capital One Business Credit Cards

Capital One Spark Cash Plus *

[ jump to details ]

The Capital One Spark Cash Plus* is Capital One’s best charge card because of its unlimited 2% cash back on every purchase and 5% cash back on hotels and rental cars booked through Capital One Travel, lack of a standard APR borrowing structure and its handful of business benefits. But because of the card’s $150 annual fee, we don’t recommend businesses apply for this card unless they have enough spending to justify the cost.

Rewards: Earn 2% cash back on every purchase and 5% cash back on hotels and rental cars booked through Capital One Travel.

Welcome offer: Earn a $1,200 cash bonus after spending $30,000 in the first three months.

Annual fee: $150

Other benefits and drawbacks: The Capital One Spark Cash Plus* lacks a standard APR because it’s designed to be paid off each month. Users pay off the entire balance each month or incur a 2.99% late fee. The card also has no set spending limit; the flexible limit is based on spending habit, payment history and credit profile.

The Capital One Spark Cash Plus* offers the ability to get your $150 annual fee refunded every year you spend at least $150,000. The card also comes with Capital One’s standard business Spark credit card benefits.

Venture X Business *

Welcome offer: Earn 150,000 bonus miles after spending $30,000 in the first three months of account opening.

Annual fee: $395

Other benefits and drawbacks: There’s no preset credit limit on the Venture X Business and given the high amount of spending required for the welcome bonus, anyone approved for the card will likely have a lot of buying power. It’s a pay-in-full charge card, so you can’t carry a balance.

Methodology

Forbes compared all of the options to find and rank the best Capital One business credit cards. Factors considered include:

  • Annual fees
  • Reward earning rates and redemption values
  • Introductory APR offers on purchases and/or balance transfers
  • Welcome bonuses
  • Other ongoing card benefits

Forbes Advisor rates cards both as stand-alone products (the card rating on the review) and compared to others in a specific use case. Sometimes, cards with average stand-alone ratings may still rank highly on a particular list according to how a person looking for a card in that category may value certain card features.

For instance, a card that might be considered mediocre overall could be the top card on a list of rewards cards with no annual fee. That’s because the card might offer limited features compared to other rewards cards, but after we remove cards that charge an annual fee, it’s the best card that remains.

Forbes Advisor uses data from multiple government agencies to determine how much a typical cardholder might spend. We use the same numbers for cards in the same category to make sure we are comparing cards the same way. The bonus categories for spending included with each card are factored into our determination of how many rewards a cardholder could expect to earn if they use the card as a consumer normally would.

How To Get a Capital One Business Credit Card

Capital One will consider a variety of businesses for its business cards, including those who freelance, do contract work or have a side hustle. You don’t need a million-dollar business to apply.

But like personal credit cards, Capital One requires steady income and a Social Security number (SSN) or Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN) to apply for business cards. That’s because your personal credit will guarantee the credit line.

When you decide which Capital One business credit card you want, take these steps to apply:

  • Enter your name and business information. If you’re a sole proprietor, use your SSN. If your business has an ITIN, use that.
  • Fill out the application to the best of your knowledge—revenue and spend estimates are fine. But honesty matters here, so don’t fudge the numbers.
  • When asked about business ownership type, you’ll select Private in most cases, unless your business is publicly traded or government owned.
  • If you’re a sole proprietor, your title will likely be owner. Be sure to include any income you have access to on a regular basis. Note that this can include a partner or spouse’s income.
  • Submit the application and cross your fingers. If your application needs review, don’t fret—this is normal. And remember, you can ask for reconsideration if your application is denied.

How Many Capital One Business Cards Can You Have?

Capital One doesn’t have a specific rule about how many business credit cards you can have at one time. The general consensus is that you can hold up to five Capital One credit cards, including personal cards.

However, you may not need (or want) that many cards. And Capital One may not be willing to extend that much credit based on your credit profile, payment history and other factors. The best advice is to get the cards you want in order of best fit.

Remember, you can ask for a product change if you’re not eligible for a new credit card and want a different one from the same issuer.

Pro Tip
It’s best practice to wait at least six months between Capital One credit card applications. Any less and your application may be automatically declined.

How To Pick a Capital One Business Credit Card

Finding the best credit card for your needs can be overwhelming. Before applying, carefully consider your options. Here are some key points to consider.

  • Rewards: What do you want from your credit card rewards: miles, points or cash back? Which will allow you to get the most out of your rewards?
  • Welcome bonuses: A welcome bonus can provide easy-to-achieve rewards early. Extra cash to help your startup—or fund your vacation—is a great perk.
  • Fees and APRs: The cost of a credit card should be carefully weighed against the benefits.
  • Benefits: Many of Capital One’s business credit cards have similar features, but travel rewards cards often have travel-related benefits. Consider what rewards you or your business will actually use and choose a card that will best suit you—not just the card with the shiniest benefits package.
  • Introductory APR: Do you need to transfer a balance or finance a purchase over time using a credit card? Consider a 0% introductory APR business credit card.
  • Existing relationships: Do you have a loan with another bank offering business credit cards? You may be more (or less) likely to see an approval from someone you’re already in business with.

Consider as many options as you have time to consider and always read the fine print before hitting that apply button.

Bottom Line

If you’re loyal to Capital One and looking for a business credit card, there are several offers that can meet your needs. However, other issuers offer business cards that could net you better rewards and perks. Still, these Capital One cards are not bad and any of them could likely help your business. The key is determining your needs and what you hope to get from your new card.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Which Capital One business credit card is the best for my business?

What is good for one business may not be good for another. Which Capital One business credit card is right for your business will depend on your business and its needs and spending patterns. Compare benefits, rewards, fees, APRs and 0% APR periods among other factors while considering your options.

Do I need good personal credit to get a business credit card?

Usually, yes. Most issuers will not issue a small business a line of credit without a personal guarantee from a business operator. Once a business has sufficient assets and income, the business may be able to secure a line of credit without providing an owner’s Social Security number, but it’s all up to the issuer and its risk tolerance. If you have fair credit, you may be able to receive approval for the Capital One® Spark® Classic for Business*.

How is a business credit card different from a personal credit card?

Business credit cards are designed for and issued to businesses—both large and small. The benefits, rewards and fees are structured toward the needs and desires of businesses rather than individual consumers. For instance, business cards often offer the ability to issue employee cards and sometimes offer compatibility with Quickbooks or other accounting software.
