Our Verdict

Our Verdict

We’ve ruled that the ScoreRewards® Credit Card* should sit out the rest of the game. Its limited rewards and redemption options come up short and its deferred-interest special financing offers just aren’t good enough.

Earn a $30 reward the day you open and use your card at Dick's Sporting Goods, Golf Galaxy or Public Lands

Introduction

Co-branded by Dick’s Sporting Goods, Field & Stream and Golf Galaxy and issued by Synchrony Bank, the ScoreRewards® Credit Card* offers a store card only available for use in these stores and online at affiliated websites. Though rewards in these stores are fairly decent and the card offers special financing, rewards may only be redeemed at these retailers and the deferred-interest financing offers are best avoided entirely.

The ScoreRewards® Credit Card* earns 2 points per dollar on qualifying in-store and Dicks.com purchases. Three hundred points can be redeemed for a $10 reward usable on merchandise. Redemptions made with purchases online are limited to two rewards ($20) per purchase and rewards made in store are limited to three rewards ($30) per purchase. Reward earnings are capped at $500 per month.

The card provides Gold status with the ScoreCard program. ScoreCard Gold status provides free shipping on orders of $49 or more, an additional annual $10 reward and access to exclusive deals along with other perks.

The ScoreRewards® Credit Card* includes special financing offers. These offers apply to purchases of specific amounts and vary in length depending on purchase amount:

Purchase Amount Deferred Interest Period
$399 to $998.99 12 months
$999 to $1,498.99 18 months
$1,499 or more 24 months

Deferred interest purchases earn 1 point for each dollar of purchases. No interest is assessed on promotional balances if paid off in full within the promotional period. If the purchase is not paid in full by the end of the period, interest will be retroactively charged from the date of purchase—not from the end of the period like with many standard low or 0% introductory APR offers. Minimum payments are still required, but paying only the minimum payment will not necessarily ensure payment in full before the end of the promotional period. Other purchases made with the card will still be subject to the card’s high 31.99% variable APR on purchases.

ScoreRewards Credit Card Rewards

Earning Rewards

The ScoreRewards® Credit Card* earns 2 points per dollar on qualifying in-store and Dicks.com purchases. Points expire one year after they’re earned if not converted to rewards. Rewards are converted automatically upon reaching the threshold for a reward conversion of 300 points. A $10 reward is issued for each 300 points earned, and a maximum of $500 in rewards may be converted per month (15,000 points). These rewards also expire, but their expiration is printed on each reward itself.

The ScoreRewards® Credit Card* includes a welcome bonus: $30 reward the day you open and use your card at Dick's Sporting Goods, Golf Galaxy or Public Lands.

Redeeming Rewards

Rewards, once converted from points, may be redeemed for merchandise purchases only. When shopping online with one of the affiliated brands, a maximum of two rewards may be redeemed per purchase. When shopping in store, the maximum usable rewards per transaction bumps up to three.

Rewards may not be redeemed for gift cards, store credit, prior purchases, shipping, gift wrapping, licenses, extended warranties or purchases made through A.D. Starr or GameChanger.

Rewards must be used all at once; no credit remains even if only part of the reward’s $10 value is used. When an item purchased with a reward is returned, a refund is issued in points, but if your purchase only uses half of the value of the reward, you’ll only receive back half of the points spent on the reward. For example, if you use a $10 reward to make a $5 purchase and later return the purchase, you’ll receive 150 points back, not 300.

Rewards Potential

To determine the rewards potential of the ScoreRewards® Credit Card*, we consider what an average household might spend on a credit card each year. Forbes Advisor uses data from various government agencies to determine baseline income and spending averages across various categories. Our estimated 70th percentile household brings in $116,000 annually and we base spending on that number.

ScoreRewards® Credit Card Rewards Potential
Category Earning Rate Estimated Annual Spend Estimated Annual Earnings
Entertainment 2X $1,176 2,352
Total: 2,352 points

These points would result in $70 in rewards with some points remaining at the end of the year.

How the ScoreRewards® Credit Card Stacks Up

ScoreRewards® Credit Card* vs. Wells Fargo Active Cash® Card

The Wells Fargo Active Cash® Card plays in a different league entirely. It has decisively established itself as a champion when it comes to flat-rate cash rewards. The card earns 2% cash rewards on purchases.

With simple, flat-rate cash rewards, the reward potential of the Active Cash easily outdoes the rewards of the ScoreRewards® Credit Card*. Considering it can be used on all purchases, anywhere, it may be a good card to consider pairing with store cards such as the ScoreRewards, but if you’re trying to find one card, the Active Cash is a winning example of how much more there is out there for you than the limited reward offered on the ScoreRewards card.

ScoreRewards® Credit Card* vs. L.L.Bean® Mastercard®*

The L.L.Bean® Mastercard®* excels in something the ScoreRewards® Credit Card* doesn’t: making rewards easy to understand. The L.L.Bean® Mastercard®* earns 4% Bean Bucks® per dollar spent at L.L. Bean, 2% Bean Bucks® per dollar spent at restaurants and gas stations and 1% Bean Bucks® per dollar spent on all other purchases and can be used anywhere Mastercard is accepted.

The L.L.Bean® Mastercard®* also bests the ScoreRewards® Credit Card* on simplicity and ease of its additional perks. The ScoreRewards Card’s requirement of a purchase to maintain an elite status within a separate program to earn free shipping on orders of $49 or more is complicated, whereas the L.L.Bean® Mastercard®* simply offers free shipping on all L.L Bean purchases made with the card or made with Bean Bucks. It even offers free return shipping and free monogramming. It doesn’t take a professional sports analyst to tell us who’ll win this match.

ScoreRewards® Credit Card* vs. ScoreRewards® Mastercard*

The ScoreRewards® Mastercard* offers the same perks and many of the same terms as the ScoreRewards® Credit Card*, but may be used anywhere Mastercard is accepted. The ScoreRewards® Mastercard* earns 2 points per dollar spent on in-store and Dicks.com purchases. It also earns an extra 1 point for every $3 spent where Mastercard is accepted.

The ScoreRewards® Mastercard* maintains the same high 31.99% variable APR on purchases, but includes an additional high APR for cash advances. We don’t recommend anyone use a credit card for a cash advance.

Is the ScoreRewards® Credit Card for You?

Maybe you’re a Little League coach and, because you’re independently wealthy, you single-handedly fund each player’s equipment needs every year. If that’s the case and Dick’s Sporting Goods is your outlet of choice, this card may be for you. If you’re looking for promotional financing, however, we don’t advise using this card. Deferred financing options can hurt more than they help. If you’re looking for financing options for a sporting goods purchase, check out our list of cards with the best 0% introductory APR offers.

Methodology

Forbes Advisor considers a variety of criteria when assigning credit cards a rating. Cards are graded based on numerous factors including:

  • Annual fees
  • Welcome bonus offers
  • Ongoing earning rates
  • Value of individual points or miles
  • Included travel or merchant credits
  • Additional cardholder benefits

Card features we expect cardholders to use the most often are weighted more heavily in our ratings. Altogether, the factors came together to provide a star rating for each individual card.
