Our Verdict

Our Verdict

The SuperCash™ Mastercard®* is a unique hybrid of debit card and credit card solving many of the problems people with lackluster or no credit experience with traditional credit cards. There’s no credit check and no interest to pay. At the same time, you can earn cash back on purchases and use the card for a cash advance, if you need a bit of extra money. However, to get the card, you’ll need to sign up for Super+, a saving and earnings app that charges a $15 monthly fee. Still, if Super+ appeals to you, this can be a solid alternative for people looking to build credit without the risk of taking on debt with a traditional credit card.

Introducing the SuperCash Card

The SuperCash™ Mastercard®* offers an alternative to traditional credit cards. Technically a secured card, it only allows you to spend what you load to your SuperCash account and reports your account activity to all three major credit bureaus.

But unlike traditional secured credit cards, the money you deposit is used to pay your bill rather than being kept in a separate account until you close the card or prove your responsibility.

Each month, you’ll use your deposits to pay off your charges for that billing cycle. Additionally, there’s no credit check and no interest rate. And despite not requiring good credit to get approved, the SuperCash card offers cashback rewards:

  • 10% cashback on all Super Travel hotels
  • 5% cashback on 500+ major brands in the Super App
  • 1% cashback everywhere Mastercard is accepted

Depending on how you plan to use the card though, you may run into some limitations. There are caps on how much you can load onto your account and how much you can spend. And if you decide you want to withdraw cash you’ve deposited for other purposes, you can only do so over the counter at a Mastercard member bank. You can withdraw cash from MoneyPass ATMs, as well, but there are lower withdrawal limits.

More importantly, you’re paying $180 a year in Super+ subscription fees to keep the card in your wallet. It’ll be hard to earn enough cashback to cover that cost, so this card is only a good fit if you’re making use of other Super+ services. In reality, there are better alternatives available.

What Is the SuperCash Card Best For?

The SuperCash™ Mastercard®* is potentially a good choice for people who are looking to build credit and learn financially responsible habits. The lack of a required credit check is nice for sure, and the limiting factor of only being allowed to spend what you load to your SuperCash account could theoretically be a tool for improving credit. But with its associated fees and limited rewards on general spending, this card likely isn’t a great choice. You’d be better with a card for rebuilding credit or even a different secured card.

SuperCash Card Rewards

Earning Rewards

One of the SuperCash™ Mastercard®*’s most appealing features is its rewards program. There are some traditional secured credit cards that offer rewards, but this card’s cash-back rates are competitive.

You’ll earn 10% cash back on purchases with SuperTravel, 5% back on purchases of 500+ major brands in the SuperShop and 1% back on all other purchases. However, your highest rewards categories are limited to purchases through Super Travel and Super Shop provided through the site. A card with rewards on gas and restaurants like the Discover it® Secured Credit Card may be a better choice.

Unfortunately, the card doesn’t have a welcome bonus, but that’s not uncommon for secured credit cards.

Redeeming Rewards

You can redeem cash back earned with the card as a deposit into your linked bank account, after which you can use the money however you’d like.

Rewards Potential

Forbes Advisor uses data from various government agencies in order to determine both baseline income and spending averages across various categories. For secured cards similar to the SuperCash card, we estimate that total annual card spending would be $30,974.

How the SuperCash Card Stacks Up

SuperCash™ Mastercard®* vs. Tomo Credit Card*

The Tomo Credit Card* is another option for people who want to avoid a credit check and interest. You’ll pay your balance in full each month, which Tomo reports to all three major credit bureaus.

The card also comes with a handful of benefits with select partners, including DoorDash, ShopRunner, and Lyft and Fandango. With no annual fee or monthly fees, this card will save you significant money.

SuperCash™ Mastercard®* vs. Discover it® Secured Credit Card

With the Discover it® Secured Credit Card, cardholders must put up a security deposit between $200 and $2,500, which establishes their credit limit. You can get your deposit back with responsible account use and good credit behavior, but it can take seven months or longer to qualify.

The good news is that the card offers 2% cash back at gas stations and restaurants on up to $1,000 in combined purchases each quarter. Plus, earn unlimited 1% cash back on all other purchases. What’s more, with Unlimited Cashback Match™ - Discover will automatically match all the cash back earned at the end of the first year. The card has no annual fee or foreign transaction fee, but it’s APR is high at 28.24% variable APR on purchases and balance transfers.

SuperCash™ Mastercard®* vs. Petal® 1 “No Annual Fee” Visa® Credit Card*

If you want a traditional unsecured credit card, you may consider the Petal® 1 “No Annual Fee” Visa® Credit Card*, issued by WebBank. If you have a credit history, Petal will consider it, but it’ll also ask you to link your bank accounts and evaluate your eligibility based on your money management. Credit limits range from $300 and $5,000, with the potential to increase your limit over time.

You can earn between 2%-10% cash back at select merchants. The card doesn’t have an annual fee or foreign transaction fee, but its interest rate is higher, between 25.24% - 34.74% variable APR.

Is the SuperCash Card for You?

The SuperCash™ Mastercard®* is locked behind a pricey $180 a year subscription to Super+. That’s a fee that’s higher than some premium travel cards. That can make it hard to justify, if you’re just looking for a card to use to build credit.

However, if you find other Super+ services, such as its saving and earning activities like surveys and games, appealing and want to sign up for Super+ anyway, the card is much more compelling.

If you’ll be paying for the subscription anyway, the card’s rewards structure makes it a good alternative to traditional secured credit cards and other credit cards for bad or limited credit.
