When comparing web hosting services, most Australian companies consider either cheaper shared hosting plans or more robust, costly dedicated hosting packages. A virtual private server (VPS) hosting plan falls between these two options. VPS plans typically allow for more bandwidth than shared hosting plans without requiring users to pay for an entire physical server as with a dedicated hosting plan.

VPS hosting services offer a balance of both flexibility and affordability that might be a good fit for your business. The best VPS hosting services offer managed and unmanaged plans with generous storage, RAM and bandwidth. We analysed all the industry’s top VPS plans.

As you will see, there are a range of prices among hosting providers, with some aiming for budget-conscious businesses and others pricing their services much higher. As with anything, you get what you pay for with VPS Hosting, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t deals out there.

Here’s who made the cut.

Why We Picked It

IONOS is a great choice for VPS hosting because it offers some of the lowest introductory prices, generous solid-state drive (SSD) storage and powerful processing. You can get started with a VPS for only $US2 ($3 AUD) per month, but what you get is noticeably low: 10 GB SSD storage, 1 GB RAM and a single vCore (equal to one physical core) for the processor. Other VPS plans range from $US3 ($4.50 AUD) per month to $US30 ($45 AUD) per month (billed monthly or annually) to start—renewal costs range from $US5 ($7.50 AUD) per month to $US50 ($75 AUD) per month (storage and RAM go up with each higher plan).

There are plenty of other features you get with every IONOS VPS hosting plan including a 99.99% uptime guarantee, unlimited bandwidth (up to 400 Mbps speed) and a secure sockets layer (SSL) certificate. You also get to choose your server location: United States, United Kingdom, Spain or Germany. IONOS gives you the access you need to manage your VPS, but also offers a bit of help with pre-installed apps, such as WordPress, Drupal and PrestaShop.

IONOS offers 24/7 support via email, phone or live chat, which helps if you have an issue at any time of day or night. On the downside, IONOS nickels and dimes you for add-ons such as for a Windows server (rather than Linux), Plesk admin tool, image importing, Microsoft databases and site migration. If you’re looking for cPanel, consider another web host—IONOS uses proprietary backend management, but it is easy to use.

Who should use it:

IONOS offers multiple options for a VPS, so it can work for anyone who wants to upgrade from shared hosting but isn’t quite ready for a dedicated server.

Pros & Cons
  • Affordable monthly plans
  • Lots of plans for upgrading allowances
  • A single vCore equivalent to one physical core
  • 30-day money-back guarantee
  • 24/7 support (phone, live chat)
  • Add-ons increase price
  • No cPanel

Why We Picked It

GoDaddy is a web host that offers affordable plans if you agree to a two- or three-year term. It’s comparable in price to our best VPS hosting service, IONOS, if you take resources into account. The low-tier VPS hosting plan from GoDaddy gives you 20 GB of SSD storage, 2GB of RAM and unmetered bandwidth at $15.95 AUD per month for a 36-month term (paid upfront in full). This is the lowest-priced VPS plan, and it renews at $15.95 AUD per month after your contract ends.

Like many other VPS hosting services, GoDaddy gives you a choice between standard RAM and high RAM plans, so you can pay twice as much to double your RAM and storage ($32.95 AUD per month for 4 GB RAM, 100 GB storage). Security features, such as an SSL certificate, firewall and malware scans come at an added cost of $8.95 AUD per month ($21.95 AUD regular cost).

It’s also worth noting that you have to pay for a cPanel or Plesk control panel ($24.95 AUD per month) and it isn’t even an option for the low-tier self-managed VPS plan.

Who should use it:

If you’re looking for an affordable VPS hosting option and you don’t mind a long-term commitment, GoDaddy could be a good choice for you.

Pros & Cons
  • Affordable introductory plans
  • Included automatic daily backups
  • Choice of cPanel or Plesk (or none)
  • 99% uptime guarantee
  • 30-day money-back guarantee
  • Requires long-term contract
  • Added monthly cost security features, control panel

Why We Picked It

It may seem odd that DreamHost includes free business email as a feature for its VPS hosting plans, but there isn’t a standard list of what you should get with a plan. DreamHost also gives you a 100% uptime guarantee, an SSL certificate and 24/7 chat support. Email hosting usually costs around $US1.67 ($2.50 AUD) per month, billed annually.

Pricing starts at $US13.75 ($21 AUD) per month annually for the low plan and gives you a generous 30 GB of storage, 1 GB of RAM and bandwidth isn’t limited (as long as you don’t use too many resources compared to your server-mates).

DreamHost doesn’t limit the number of domains you can host on your VPS, but you still have to adhere to its policy about resource usage. If you attract too much traffic that  puts a strain on other clients’ sites, you may have to upgrade your plan.

Who should use it:

DreamHost gives you a solid line-up of features, including free business email, which can save you around $US20 ($30 AUD) per year on costs.

Pros & Cons
  • Free business email included
  • 100% uptime guarantee
  • Generous SSD storage on low plan
  • Low price increase after intro offer
  • No limit on domains
  • SSL included
  • 24/7 support
  • Long-term contract needed for lower pricing
  • More expensive than industry standard

Why We Picked It

Hostinger is one of the few VPS hosting companies that won’t hide behind claims of unlimited or unmetered bandwidth and traffic. Just as it lays out the resources you’re allowed for storage and RAM, it tells you how much bandwidth you get per month. The low-tier plan has an introductory rate of $US4.49 ($6.79 AUD) per month, which gives you 50 GB of SSD storage, 4 GB RAM and 1 TB of bandwidth.

The standard control panel from Hostinger is its own hPanel, which is easy to use, but if you’re set on using cPanel, you’ll have to purchase a cPanel license separately. Hostinger provides automatic weekly backups and a snapshot tool, which lets you take a server image for recovery purposes. Although Hostinger’s plans are affordable, keep in mind that the pricing is for a four-year contract and renewal pricing is more than double the introductory rate.

Who should use it:

If you don’t want to have to guess  whether your site traffic is slowing down the server you’re on, consider Hostinger as your VPS host—you’ll know precisely how much bandwidth you’re allowed with each plan.

Pros & Cons
  • Transparent resource allowance
  • Automatic weekly backups
  • Low introductory rates
  • 24/7 chat support
  • Renewal cost more than doubles
  • Four-year contract required for lowest rates

Why We Picked It

Similar to Hostinger, Hostwinds is all about transparency, and it doesn’t try to rope you into a long contract at bargain-bin prices—only to double or triple the cost when it’s time to renew. More significantly perhaps is that Hostwinds gives you a lot of options. You can go with a fully managed VPS or a self-managed server (at a slightly lower cost) on either Linux or Windows server.

Hostwinds’ low-priced plan costs $US10.99 ($17 AUD) per month. It also offers unmanaged Linux VPS hosting for $US4.99 ($7.49 AUD) per month. This plan gives you a single CPU, 1GB RAM, 30GB SSD storage and 1TB bandwidth. In the spirit of choice, Hostwinds gives you even more options: 10 different plans per server type.

Who should use it:

If you’re expecting your business to hit a growth spurt, Hostwinds could be a good choice for VPS hosting because it gives you a lot of options for plans and server types that are easy to upgrade.

Pros & Cons
  • Managed and self-managed VPS available
  • Linux and Windows servers available
  • 99.9999% uptime guarantee
  • Transparent bandwidth allowance
  • 24/7 support
  • Managed VPS a bit expensive
  • Refunds issued only within 72 hours

Why We Picked It

MochaHost is one of our favourite web hosts and its VPS hosting is decent, despite offering a little less than the industry standard. The low-tier plan (Ristretto4) gives you 40 GB SSD storage, 0.5 GB RAM and 500 GB bandwidth. While the storage is generous and the RAM is okay, the bandwidth is low compared to Hostwinds and Hostinger.

If you sign up for a two- or three-year plan (for the Ristretto4 plan), you can get either a 20% or 30% lifetime discount. So, you’ll pay an average of $18 AUD per month (for three years, upfront payment) or $20.56 AUD per month (for two years, upfront bill). Otherwise, the regular price is $25.70 AUD per month (introductory cost is $12.86 AUD per month for the first month).

In addition to getting a lifetime discount (if you take advantage of that offer), you also get a 180-day money-back guarantee, which is one of the longest among web hosts. To be fair though, an average of $15 AUD per month is a bit high compared to many other VPS hosts.

Who should use it:

The 180-day money-back guarantee is a nice safety net if you find that MochaHost isn’t the right VPS host for you.

Pros & Cons
  • 180-day money-back guarantee
  • Lifetime discount offered for long terms
  • 100% uptime guarantee
  • Managed and unmanaged Linux and Windows servers
  • Expensive monthly renewals
  • Low bandwidth allowance

Why We Picked It

InterServer offers one of the most affordable semi-managed cloud VPS hosting plans around. There are no long-term contracts or high renewal fees after a low introductory price. You pay $US6 ($9.00 AUD) per month for entry-level resources. If you want to double those resources, your price doubles to $US12 ($18 AUD) per month. If you prefer Windows OS over Linux, the price starts at $US10 ($15 AUD) per month.

For managed hosting, you need to purchase at least four slices ($US24 ($36 AUD) per month). Even if you opt for an unmanaged plan, you still get 24/7 support by phone, chat or ticket. The standard control panel you get is DirectAdmin, but you can upgrade to the popular and easy-to-use cPanel for $US15 ($23 AUD) per month or Plesk for $US10 ($15 AUD) per month.

Who should use it:InterServer is a budget-friendly cloud VPS hosting service. If you have a growing business and think you may need more resources later, this is a good scaling option.

Pros & Cons
  • Lowest VPS regular prices
  • Linux and Windows OS available
  • 24/7 support
  • Easy to scale up or down resources
  • Unmanaged until you purchase four slices
  • No discount for paying in advance
  • cPanel costs extra

Why We Picked It

HostGator offers several types of hosting and was named our top pick for shared hosting, but its VPS option is a bit tricky to recommend. The great thing about it is that each VPS plan is packed with resource allowances. HostGator’s low-tier plan gives you 120 GB SSD storage, 2 GB RAM and unmetered bandwidth, but the cost is steep.

Introductory pricing is high on its own at $US36.99 ($55.99 AUD) per month (billed annually), but that’s only for the first year. The renewal cost is $US85.99 ($130.15 AUD) per month with no discount. If you want cPanel, that will cost extra. Part of the value of HostGator could be its well-reviewed round-the-clock customer support; it’s available 24/7 by email, phone and live chat.

Learn more:Read our full HostGator review.

Who should use it:

Even the best VPS hosting services severely limit storage and RAM resources, but HostGator is generous with its offerings, so if you know you need more than what’s standard, go with HostGator. Word of warning: It will be expensive.

Pros & Cons
  • Free domain for the first year
  • Free website transfers
  • Expensive renewals
  • Charged for domain if you cancel within the first year
  • Potential storage and bandwidth limits

Why We Picked It

Bluehost offers semi-managed VPS services that are comparable to most of its competitors—even the price. Although known for cheap shared hosting services, Bluehost prices its virtual servers a bit higher. You can get your first three years for $US31.99, or $48.42 AUD per month, which is higher than other hosts.

Bluehost’s VPS services are semi-managed because you get full root access, but you also get help from the 24/7 support team. Keep in mind that Bluehost treats its VPS pricing differently than its shared hosting costs, so you won’t get a deep discount for signing up for three years. You do get a free domain name for the first year, which isn’t common for most VPS hosts.

Learn more:Read our full Bluehost review.

Who Should Use It:If you’re new to the world of VPS hosting, Bluehost is a good starting point for beginners. You can use cPanel, which is easy to use. If you find that you’re running out of resources, you can add more storage to your account. Plus, Bluehost promises to make it possible to add more RAM and data transfer the same way soon.

Pros & Cons
  • Free domain name with annual contract
  • Low intro price
  • 24/7 support
  • Add more storage anytime
  • No discount for annual contract
  • Lots of add-ons increase total cost

What Is VPS Hosting?

VPS hosting is an upgrade from shared hosting. With a shared hosting plan, your website lives on a server with many other websites. It’s an effective solution for small and new websites that don’t require a lot of resources for files or high traffic. On a VPS plan, you still share space with others, but you aren’t sharing resources—you have your own RAM, storage and CPU power.

Your VPS is a virtual space with dedicated resources on a single physical server. That’s why you’ll see options for more CPU cores, RAM and storage. However, you’re still limited to the constraints of that physical server. If you need more than the highest plan offered by a VPS host, you may need to consider cloud hosting or a dedicated server. You can read more about cloud hosting in our guide to some of the best on the market for Australians.

When your site grows after years of content, ranking higher in search engines and more visitors, you may need to move up to a VPS. If shared hosting is like living in a commune where you share food and space, a VPS is like having your own home in a neighbourhood (and you don’t have to share your food).

What Are the Benefits of VPS Hosting?

If you’re getting more resources via a VPS server, it stands to reason you get faster page loading and better performance. You also pay a higher price. Some of the benefits of a VPS server are less obvious, though.

  • More control: Usually a VPS host gives you root access and choices of control panel, so you can manage your server and its security.
  • Fully managed option: If having control doesn’t appeal to you, there’s fully managed VPS hosting, which is a lot like shared hosting in that the web host takes care of updates and security for you.
  • More stability: You’re sharing server space with fewer people, so you’re less likely to see your site down or lag.
  • Better performance: Although there’s no guarantee that you’ll get faster page load speed by using a VPS, your increased resources and a dedicated slice of processing power should make a big difference compared to shared hosting (look for a content delivery network, or CDN, option, too).
  • More scalable: Starting off your site on a VPS gives it far more room to grow; specifically to handle bigger spikes in traffic. On a shared server, you may use up your resources too quickly and be asked to upgrade anyway.

How To Choose the Best VPS Hosting Provider

The best VPS host for you will depend on your unique hosting needs and budget. For example, if you need to host a large amount of data, then you will want to look at hosting plans that offer generous amounts of storage at a solid value. But if site performance is a top priority, you might want to invest in premium plans that offer dedicated CPU cores and RAM.

Essential VPS Host Features

Consider the features you need to effectively run your site or sites. The best VPS hosting providers offer a lot of choice:

  • Root access: Gives you direct control over your slice of the server.
  • Dedicated support: Get answers to questions quickly (and usually 24/7).
  • Choice of control panel: Use cPanel, Plesk or a proprietary control panel.
  • Site migration: Have your host move your existing site over to your new virtual server (free or at added cost).
  • Enhanced security: Get protection from malware and distributed denial of service (DDoS) attacks.

Uptime and Downtime Rates

Most hosting companies offer 99% or higher uptime promises and guarantees. You should expect your server to be down occasionally because web hosts need to update hardware and software. Generally, they have redundancies and backups so you don’t lose data and you don’t suffer too much downtime.

There’s a big difference between 99% uptime and 99.9% uptime. Here’s what the difference between uptime guarantees can look like in terms of minutes down:

99% uptime = ~14 minutes downtime per day (3 days, 14 hours per year)
99.5% uptime = ~7 minutes downtime per day (1 day, 19 hours per year)
99.9% uptime = ~1.5 minutes downtime per day (9.5 hours per year)

As you can see, even half a percent can make a huge difference in how much time servers are down. Keep in mind that an uptime guarantee simply guarantees that you won’t have more downtime than what’s expected. If you do, a web host usually gives you a prorated credit for the time your site or VPS was down.

Customer Support

Having 24/7 support from your web host is always important because you never know when you may need tech help. That help may not always be related to downtime either. If you’re new to managing your own server, you may have questions. Look for hosting providers that offer round-the-clock support for live chat and phone (or at least one or the other), email and knowledge bases.

Managed vs Unmanaged VPS Hosting

Managed VPS hosting is a great option for anyone who doesn’t consider themselves to be tech-savvy. If you’re moving from shared hosting to VPS for the first time, it’s a good idea to start with a managed VPS plan because you won’t have to do much. The hosting company’s tech team will take care of the maintenance of your server, including security patches and updates.

Unmanaged hosting is ideal for developers who know their way around a server. You have root access and therefore complete control over your operating system, setup, control panel, security patches and updates to apps. Of course, this means you need to pay close attention to your server’s maintenance. Because of the hands-on nature, most unmanaged VPS plans are less expensive.

Do You Need a Dedicated Server?

A dedicated server is more expensive, but you get the entire server to yourself. It’s a bump up from a VPS because you don’t share resources with others. A dedicated server for your site results in faster loading speeds, more resources to handle more files or content, and a flood of traffic.

Most Australian small businesses won’t need a dedicated server right away, but there are a few caveats. One of the best ways to judge whether you need to upgrade to a dedicated server is to look at your traffic from your busiest days, such as holiday sales days. If your site was sluggish on those days and you had spikes in traffic, it might be time to consider upgrading to a dedicated server.

In addition to having all the server’s resources to yourself, you’re likely to get dedicated support, complete control over your server’s configuration and there’s no threat of malware or spam bringing your server down from another user’s actions.

How Much Does VPS Hosting Cost?

Most VPS hosting companies follow the same pricing structure: monthly or annual plans. Some offer three-month, six-month or multiple-year plan options. And the cost for VPS usually ranges from $10 AUD to $75 AUD per month at regular price; on the low end, you can find hosting plans for $3 AUD per month or as high as $100 AUD per month.

For the bargain-bin pricing, such as $3 AUD per month, you typically pay upfront for an entire year or multiple years of service. Higher-priced options may be paid on a month-to-month basis and require no long-term contracts. And the low-tier or basic plans have low resources in common.

Basic plans limit your resources significantly, though you still get more than shared hosting users. You’re likely to see around 1 GB of RAM and 10 GB to 30 GB of storage. Processing power is also fairly limited: it’s rare to see an entry-level plan offer more than one CPU core. If bandwidth is measured, you may get around 1 TB before seeing your site slow.

Upgrading to an advanced plan gives you far more room to grow your site or sites. Top-tier plans can offer up to 16 CPU cores, upwards of 500 GB of storage and 30 GB of RAM. And the more you pay, the higher your transfer allowance goes, too—we’ve seen some as high as 32 TB of bandwidth.

To save the most money on VPS hosting, choose an annual plan or pay for multiple years in advance. You can start with a low-tier plan and upgrade as needed, but the benefit of paying a lot now is that you typically save 25% to 50% (and even more sometimes) off the regular price.

Other Types of Web Hosting Services To Consider

As you shop for the best VPS hosting service, you may come across other types of hosting and wonder if they might be better. In some cases, they may be; it depends on your needs, budget and tech stack (and tech skill).

In addition to VPS, these are some common hosting types you may want to consider:

  • Shared hosting: If you’re just starting out with a new site or brand, shared hosting may be your best option. It’s affordable and usually fully managed, so it’s a hands-off option. However, it can be slower and less secure.
  • Cloud hosting: Similar to VPS hosting, cloud hosting is a good solution for businesses with sites that get a lot of traffic and need extra resources, but there’s an added benefit to cloud hosting. Your sites are hosted on multiple remote servers, so you should have increased uptime. Plus, many cloud hosting providers let you add resources as you need them.
  • Dedicated hosting: A dedicated server is the most expensive option, but it’s also the most stable and secure and offers the most resources. It’s the best pick for large Australian businesses with tons of regular traffic and big spikes during sales days.
  • Reseller hosting: If you run an online agency for website design, it might be worth looking into reseller hosting so you can offer clients a full package that includes hosting. You pay wholesale rates for hosting and then essentially sell a white-labelled hosting plan to your clients at whatever rate you want to set.

Methodology

There are specific criteria you have to consider when choosing the best VPS hosting services for your needs. We started by analysing 14 hosting companies for our comparison. We then scored them across 24 criteria, giving considerable weight to virtual private server-specific features such as the number of resources each company allotted for entry-level plans, the starting price and whether they offer both managed and unmanaged VPS options.

Here are some of the categories that we used to rank the providers that made our list.

Pricing

The starting price for VPS hosting needed to be affordable for a provider to fare well in our rankings. Those with an entry-level price of $10 AUD per month or lower fared the best. However, some providers either feature short introductory offers or  major price increases once the introductory offer comes to an end, so those that had low to no price increases upon contract renewal received high marks. Other pricing factors we considered included how many sites were covered in a VPS hosting plan and how long of a money-back guarantee a provider offered. Pricing amounted to 40% of the total score.

Features

We considered the basic features you should expect of any web hosting company, including helpful support, uptime guarantees, lower annual pricing and customer reviews. Of course, everyone’s needs are different, so be sure to research the unique features, pricing, refunds and resource allowances to determine which VPS host is best for you. Other features we considered include unlimited storage, unlimited bandwidth, cPanel and SSL certificate availability and if a free domain name was available. Additionally, we considered whether these items came with the service as part of the monthly fee or as an add-on. Unique features, such as free business email, automatic backup scheduling and content delivery network, also counted in our rankings. We weighted features at 20% of our final score.

Third-Party Reviews

Turning to popular third-party review websites such as Capterra and Trustpilot, we gauged real users’ experiences with the VPS hosting services. This included looking at the total number of positive reviews the providers had on each website and how many of those reviews were on the high end of the spectrum (at least 3.5 out of 5). Customer opinion accounted for 20% of the total score.

Expert Analysis

Based on the categories listed above and our Australian market research, we also ranked additional criteria from customer reviews that included popularity, value for the money, stand-out features and ease of use to come up with our final tally. These criteria made up 20% of the total score.

About Star Rankings

You will note that we have included a star rating next to each product or provider. This rating was determined by the editorial team once all of the data points above were considered, and the pros and cons of each product attribute was reviewed. The star rating is solely the view of Forbes Advisor editorial staff. Commercial partners or advertisers have no bearing on the star rating or their inclusion on this list. Star ratings are only one factor to be considered, and Forbes Advisor encourages you to seek independent advice from an authorised financial adviser in relation to your own financial circumstances a

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

What is the best VPS hosting service in Australia?

Forbes Advisor named IONOS the best overall VPS host because of its affordable plans, 24/7 support and 99.99% uptime guarantee. Our other top picks include GoDaddy and DreamHost.

Do I need VPS hosting in Australia?

As your business grows and your site traffic increases, you may need to consider upgrading from a shared server to a VPS. It may also be necessary to opt for a VPS if you have plans to build a more complex website that shared hosting can’t support.

Why is VPS hosting so expensive?

A VPS plan comes with a portion of resources dedicated to your sites alone, so you pay for that exclusivity. A managed VPS plan often costs more because tech support is also dedicated to your virtual space, whereas an unmanaged plan is more affordable because the technical details are your responsibility. If VPS hosting servers are too expensive for you right now, consider the best cheap web hosting services.

How many websites can I host with a VPS?

Technically, you can host as many websites as you’d like on a VPS. The only limitation that should exist with your VPS is your total allotment of resources.

Is VPS hosting secure?

VPS hosting services offer the same type of security measures that you would find with other types of hosting services. This includes measures such as firewalls, backup software, DDoS attack protection, server hardening and frequent scanning for vulnerabilities, as well as constant updates and patches made to the software.

What is managed VPS hosting?

Managed VPS hosting is similar to shared hosting in that the provider offers help with the configuration and maintenance of your VPS. Setup, security and updates can all be handled by your host. It’s also a slightly more expensive option than unmanaged hosting.

What's the difference between shared hosting and VPS hosting?

Shared hosting splits resources on a single server among many users while VPS hosting creates virtual server space with dedicated resources for each user. Usually, a VPS carries fewer users, so there’s less strain on the physical server.

What's the difference between cloud hosting and VPS?

The biggest difference between VPS and cloud hosting is that a VPS is set up on a single physical server while cloud servers are set up on multiple networked physical servers. On a cloud server, you can increase or decrease your resources as needed.
