If you’re looking to join the Virgin Velocity Frequent Flyer Program and take advantage of its many travel-related benefits, taking out a credit card that can earn you Velocity points is a good place to start.

Cardholders can earn points on purchases, which can then be redeemed to spend on flights with Virgin Australia, other partner airlines, or on other purchases. Certain credit cards may also offer additional perks, such as lounge access twice a year or seat upgrades once a year. These credit cards also often come with a promotional offer of tens of thousands of additional points if you spend a certain amount within a set number of months after your application is approved.

In total there are nine credit cards that allow customers to earn points directly into Virgin Velocity. Below, you can find how we rate the six credit cards on offer to individuals. We explain more about the cards for businesses and professionals, further down the page. All cards offer unlimited potential to earn points unless a monthly limit is stated.

Why We Picked It

There’s a hefty $375 annual fee attached to this card, but it offers the most benefits out of all the cards listed, starting with the super competitive 2.25 points offered per $1 spent on Virgin Australia purchases. There are also 1.25 points per $1 for most other eligible purchases, and 0.5 points per $1 when spending with Australian government bodies, such as the ATO, Australia Post, and federal or state and local government bodies. Up until 31 January, new cardholders who have not held an American Express card in the last 18 months, and those who are not David Jones cardholders, are also rewarded 60,000 bonus points if they applied for the card online and spend $3,000 on eligible purchases, within the first three months after approval.

The number and range of perks attached to this card make it an attractive offering for the keen traveller. Cardholders receive at least 100 Velocity Frequent Flyer Status Credits when they spend at least $50,000 on eligible purchases in a full card membership year. Each anniversary year cardholders are also rewarded with a complimentary Virgin Australia economy domestic return flight between selected cities after their first card spend. They will also receive two single entry complimentary lounge passes for Virgin Australia and The Centurion Lounge at Sydney or Melbourne International Airport.

To take advantage of travel cover, you should pay for your trip using your card. The insurance will also extend to your partner, and children who are dependents. It pays out for medical emergency expenses; up to $400,000 for a public transport accident; up to $12,500 for trip cancellation and amendment; and up to 10,000 for lost or damaged baggage, money or documents. Why We Picked It

There is no annual fee attached to this card, and as you would expect from a no-frills option, the travel perks are also minimal.

However, requiring just a minimum balance of $2,000, it is available to a wider group of consumers than some of the competitors’ cards listed and is therefore ideal for those on a budget who still wish to accrue points.

It simply offers up to 1.75 points per $1 spent on eligible purchases with Virgin Australia, 0.75 points per $1 spent on most card purchases and 0.5 points per $1 for purchases made with a government body.

Pros & Cons
  • $0 annual card fee
  • Minimum balance $2,000
  • No minimum income requirement stated

Each anniversary year you can also request an annual $129 Virgin Australia gift voucher which will be provided as a Virgin Australia Travel Bank credit. To be able to do so you must make a retail purchase in the two months prior to requesting your voucher. Annual Fee

$295, plus an annual Altitude Velocity Rewards fee of $75

Why We Picked It

The Westpac Altitude Black Credit Card is an example of getting what you pay for. There’s an annual fee of $295 for the card, plus an annual Altitude Velocity Rewards fee of $75 which allows you to earn Velocity points. (The alternative would be to earn Qantas points). Both fees make the card the most expensive out of all those listed, however, the cost can be offset by the many benefits the card has to offer, especially if you’re an avid spender.

For instance, up until 30 April, new Westpac Altitude Black Credit Cardholders are rewarded with a competitive 90,000 bonus Velocity points if they spend $6,000 in the first 120 days of being accepted for the card. They are rewarded again if they stick with the card for a second year, earning 30,000 points after their first eligible second-year purchase.

Note that you won’t be eligible for these points if you’ve held an Altitude Platinum or Altitude Black card with Altitude Rewards, Qantas or Velocity in the past year. The bonus points come in addition to the 0.75 points per $1 which can be earned on eligible purchases with no points cap—a decent offer compared to the competition.

Cardholders can redeem their points for flights, upgrades, shopping and more, and additionally can take advantage of a number of perks. This includes travel insurance for interstate trips and up to six months’ cover for international getaways, two complimentary Economy X Seat Upgrade vouchers each year for domestic flights, and two complimentary single-entry Virgin Australia domestic lounge passes each year.

Pros & Cons
  • Super competitive bonus points offer
  • Flight and lounge access perks
  • Travel insurance
  • Additional $75 annual Altitude Velocity Rewards fee
  • $75,000 minimum income requirement
  • Only one additional cardholder permitted

Why We Picked It

Up until 30 April, new Westpac Altitude Platinum Credit Cardholders can receive 70,000 Velocity points if they spend $4,000 on eligible purchases in the 90 days after card approval. However, everyday spend is less generously rewarded with 0.5 Velocity points per $1. This comes in exchange for an annual fee of $99 in the first year, and $175 thereafter (conditions apply). Those already with Westpac are offered a lower annual fee of $49 in the first year of holding the card.

The card offers up to six months’ complimentary cover for international travel, interstate flight inconvenience insurance and cover for rental vehicle excess in Australia, if you have used your card to pay for your trip. It also offers cover for injuries sustained as a passenger while travelling overseas. You’ll also get two complimentary Economy X seat upgrade vouchers to use on selected domestic Virgin Australia flights.

Pros & Cons
  • Flight perks
  • Travel insurance
  • Bonus points offer
  • No lounge access perks
  • Only 0.5 points per $1 on eligible purchases
  • $75 annual Altitude Velocity Rewards program fee

Methodology

We exclusively researched the nine Virgin Velocity credit cards available to Australians and did not analyse ‘flexible rewards credit cards’, which allow you to transfer points to Velocity as well as other airline programs.

Our analysis compared the cards across the following data points:

  • Bonus points
  • Points per spend
  • Annual fee
  • Currency conversion fee
  • Rewards points cap
  • Travel benefits
  • Lounge access
  • Interest rate
  • Minimum income requirement
  • Minimum credit card balance
  • Interest-free period
  • Number of additional cardholders permitted.

We viewed the interest rates on these cards as a minor factor when rating them as we assume that travellers are using the cards correctly for points accrual, and are paying the cards off in full each month (thereby negating the need to pay interest). But as a general rule, the cards listed charge 19.99% to 23.99% in interest.

About Star Rankings

You will note that we have included a star rating next to each product or provider. The star rating is solely the view of Forbes Advisor editorial staff. Commercial partners or advertisers have no bearing on the star rating or their inclusion on this list. What Is The Virgin Velocity Frequent Flyer Loyalty Program?

Virgin Velocity Frequent Flyer is Virgin Australia’s loyalty program that allows members to earn points on flights, holidays, everyday shopping, and if you have a credit card, eligible purchases you make when using it.

According to Virgin, it currently boasts almost 11.5 million members, who all can earn points via more than 300 brands, whether that be through transferring Flybuys points, shopping in the Velocity e-store or wine store or making purchases using a Virgin Velocity Frequent Flyer credit card. Points earned when using a credit card are loaded into the cardholder’s online Velocity account.

Currently members can redeem from 6,200 points for a flight. This can get them a one-way economy class seat from Sydney to the Gold Coast, for example. A trip from Sydney to Fiji requires 17,800 points. In both cases taxes, fees and carrier charges are payable on top of the points that must be redeemed.

In addition to flights, members can also use their points for hotel bookings, and retail purchases, but bear in mind that points expire after 24 months.

What Should I Consider When Comparing Virgin Velocity Frequent Flyer Credit Cards?

As when considering any type of credit card, remember to check the terms and conditions for any fees, charges and limits that may apply.

These can include:

  • Minimum credit limit
  • Minimum repayments
  • Interest on purchases
  • Interest-free period
  • Interest on cash advances
  • Balance transfer interest rate
  • Annual fee
  • Currency conversion fee
  • Late payment fee

Of course you’ll also want to check the benefits:

  • Points earned per dollar: While 1 point per $1 is decent, 1.25 points per $1 or more is ideal, but usually comes with a higher card annual fee
  • Promotional offers: These can greatly boost your points. The offer may be ongoing or limited to applicants who sign up before a certain date. Usually these dates are extended, which means it’s rare to sign up to a new card without some form of a bonus points offer—sometimes as high as 100,000, although conditions apply.
  • Perks: These can include access to particular lounges and seat upgrades, a specific number of times per year. Some credit cards offer travel insurance. As with any type of insurance, it’s best to read the small print for the exact cover included and any limitations. Conditions on cover may differ if you take a domestic or international trip too.
  • Additional cardholders: Often you can add one to nine additional cardholders, depending on the provider, which can allow you to accrue points even quicker as they use the card too. Depending on the provider, there may be a fee per cardholder. The American Express Velocity Business Card allows up to 100 staff members as cardholders, including the primary holder, but each must pay the annual fee.

What Is The Difference Between A Charge Card And A Credit Card?

Unlike credit cards, charge cards usually require the cardholder to pay the balance in full each month. They may also have no credit limit but monitor the cardholder’s financial behaviour to determine whether to approve purchases.

In comparison, credit cards allow the card holder to carry a balance over time, by paying a minimum monthly payment, though they’ll usually incur interest charges for this privilege. Credit cards especially suit those who want extra time to pay down their bills after making purchases. They usually offer a set number of days to pay off the monthly balance interest-free on purchases.

All the cards listed are credit cards, with the exception of the American Express Velocity Business Card which is technically a charge card. The credit cards each have an income requirement and a lower credit limit ranging from $2,000 to $15,000:

Card Annual Income Requirement Minimum Balance Permitted Interest Interest-Free Period
American Express Velocity Platinum Card Not stated, though applicants will need to show proof of income $3,000 22.99% on purchases The ‘Flexible Payment Option’ Allows cardholders to pay a minimum monthly payment or more and carry over over any unpaid amount to their next month’s balance Up to 55 days
BOQ Specialist Platinum Card $60 000 (students exempt from minimum income requirement) $6 000 23.50% p.a. Up to 55 days
BOQ Specialist Signature Card $120,000 $15 000 20.50% Up to 55 days
Virgin Australia Velocity High Flyer Card $75,000 Good credit rating $15,000 20.74% Up to 55 days
American Express Velocity Escape Card Not stated, though applicants will need to show proof of income $2,000 23.99% p.a. The ‘Plan It Instalments’ option allows cardholders to pay off their credit card balance in equal monthly instalments, with 0% p.a. interest and a fixed monthly fee Up to 55 days
Virgin Australia Velocity Flyer Card $35,000 $6,000 20.74% p.a. Up to 55 days

This may be a one-way business flight. Those between 7,001 and 8,500 miles require 95,500 Velocity points. Shorter international flights require fewer points while domestic flights, such as from Sydney to Melbourne, or from Brisbane to Perth, require between 6,200 and 59,500 points.

Alternatively, you may want to use your points to book a hotel. Currently two nights at the 4-star Tanoa International Hotel in Fiji requires 93,600 points. If you haven’t quite accumulated enough points the Velocity Points + Pay system will allow you to make a part cash payment.

There are also other types of travel rewards for car hire and adventure experiences, for example. You can also redeem your points on everyday shopping.

Certain credit cards offer complimentary access to the Virgin Australia Lounge at selected domestic airports twice a year.
