Allianz’s Comprehensive Comprehensive Car Insurance policy is one of our favourite car insurance providers, due to its wide range of comprehensive offerings: hire car and choose-your-own-repairer inclusions; cover for accidental damage; and decent after-accident car, such as towing or transport. Despite some low reviews on ProductReview—with many citing poor customer service and, more recently, premium increases—the product has won many awards for its customer service capabilities which span online live chats, phone and email.

Pros

  • Choice of repairer
  • Live chat customer service available
  • New-for-old car replacement

Cons

  • Roadside assistance needs to be purchased
  • Some poor customer reviews via ProductReview

About Allianz Comprehensive Car Insurance

Allianz Car Insurance is a highly regarded car insurance provider, winning an array of industry awards over the years, including ‘Insurer of the Year’ and ‘Excellence in Claims’.

It has had plenty of time in the industry to refine its products and services, with Allianz Australia established as a wholly owned subsidiary of the worldwide Allianz Group more than 100 years ago.

More than three million Australians are now insured across Allianz Australia’s offerings, with their car insurance portfolio receiving a 2.4 star score out of more than 1,000 reviews on ProductReview, which do tend to skew negative, Meanwhile, Allianz’s in-house customer satisfaction survey awarded the company 4.4 stars out of 5 based on 5,362 reviews.

The following article will explain the ins and outs of Allianz’s Comprehensive Car Insurance policy, helping you understand whether the policy will suit your needs.

What Is Covered?

Allianz’s Comprehensive Car Insurance offering is the most in-depth policy the company offers, and includes ‘any-driver cover’,  as well as accidental damage to your car or other people’s cars or property.

The policy can be uniquely tailored to each person, but the base inclusions (and the optional extras) are outlined below.

Break ins, accidents, and after accident care

The Allianz Comprehensive Car Insurance policy covers accidental damage, meaning you will be covered for the costs of any damages made to your car–whether you or someone else is responsible for the damage. It will also cover accidental damage to other vehicles or properties.

If an accident occurs and your car is unable to be driven away from the scene, Allianz will also cover the cost of towing your car along with transport to and from the repairer or rental car centre, or from the scene of the accident to your next destination. Or, pending certain conditions, Allianz will supply you with a rental car so you can leave the site yourself.

You will also be covered by Allianz should any break-ins occur to your vehicle; personal items are covered up to $500, and baby seats are also covered up to $500.

Will Allianz replace my car if it’s written off?

Yes, policyholders of the Allianz Comprehensive Car Insurance policy can access new-for-old car replacement. This means Allianz will replace your car if it is written off; however, this is only available for new cars purchased less than two years ago.

Can I choose my own repairer?

A key feature of the Allianz Comprehensive Car Insurance policy is that it allows policyholders to choose their own repairers: most insurers, if they offer this feature at all, only allow you to add this on as an additional cost. This means if you have a trusted mechanic nearby, you will still be able to use their services in times of need rather than having to go to a new mechanic or repairer that the insurance provider chooses for you.

Allianz does state however that a second quote may be required before claims are accepted and paid out when using your own repairer.

Is free roadside assistance included?

No, free roadside assistance isn’t automatically included on the Allianz Comprehesive Car Insurance policy. It can be added as an optional extra instead, at a higher cost.

Allianz Customer Service (aka How Easy is it to Make a Claim?)

Allianz has been positively portrayed for its customer service capabilities, and its industry awards speak to an easy claims process. These claims can be submitted online via the Allianz website, or there is also a phone line exclusively for claims that customers can call.

Allianz has another phone line for enquiries, and also has a livechat function serviced via Facebook Messenger, which is monitored every day of the week. It is worth pointing out, however, that some customers on Product Review have complained about issues with Allianz customer service.

Allianz Comprehensive Car Insurance: Extras and Exclusions

As stated, customers of the comprehensive car insurance policy at Allianz can tailor the plan to suit them best by opting for certain extras, such as free roadside assistance and reducing the excess for your windscreen replacement.

You’re also able to have add any driver under your coverage (such as if you lend the car to a friend), and you have the flexibility to choose your amount of excess.

The conditions that may lead to your claim being void, also known as the policy exclusions, include but are not limited to:

  • Unlicensed drivers, or those not following the conditions of their license;
  • Drivers who exceed the legal limit of alcohol or are under the influence of drugs;
  • Any drivers who refuse a drug or alcohol test;
  • Unregistered or unroadworthy cars;
  • Cars being used as a taxi or ride-share services;
  • Cars being used to deliver foods or other goods for payment;
  • Vehicles carrying more than the legal amount of passengers;
  • Any illegal activities or purposes; and
  • Any other exclusions as detailed in the PDS.

Can I Get A Discount On Allianz Comprehensive Car Insurance?

Rather than offering a ‘drive less, pay less’ discount–where your policy costs less if you don’t drive your car on a regular basis–this is automatically factored into your Allianz Comprehensive Car Insurance policy.

Additionally, there are no current discounts available online via promotions or multi-policy discounts. There is however a ‘safe driver discount’ which takes into account your driving history and claims history. The maximum safe driver discount that Allianz offers on its Comprehensive Car Insurance policy is 10%.
