Our Verdict

Our Verdict

Drivers who fill up at bp and Amoco can save money on fuel thanks to the discount the BPme Rewards Visa®* offers at the pump—and foodies will appreciate cash back on dining and groceries. However, if you aren’t loyal to a particular gas station brand and prefer to fill your tank wherever it is most convenient, there are better credit cards for your wallet. Plus, anyone who carries a balance will likely be put off by the interest rate.

BPme Rewards Visa Credit Card Introduction

The BPme Rewards Visa®* is issued by First National Bank of Omaha, but you don’t have to live in a state with an FNBO branch to apply for the card. It has an annual fee of $0 and comes with a competitive regular discount on fuel purchased at bp and Amoco gas stations. It also earns cash back on purchases in useful spending categories.

However, the card isn’t without drawbacks. If you get a lot of your fuel at other gas station chains, the BPme Rewards Visa®* doesn’t offer you much on those purchases. It also comes with an APR so high it might make you do a double take: 31.99% fixed APR on purchases and balance transfers. It’s always smart to pay off your credit card in full each month to avoid incurring interest, but sometimes life gets in the way. If you ever carry a balance on this card, expect it to be expensive.

What Is the BPme Rewards Visa Credit Card Best For?

If you’re devoted to filling up at bp or Amoco and don’t carry a balance every month, the BPme Rewards Visa®* can be a beneficial card to keep in your wallet for the gas perk.

BPme Visa Credit Card Rewards

Earning Rewards

The BPme Rewards Visa®* earns 15 cents off every gallon of bp and Amoco fuel purchases, 5% cash back on non-fuel bp and Amoco purchases, 3% cash back on grocery and dining purchases and 1% back on all other qualifying purchases.

While there’s no cap on rewards you can earn, note that rewards expire on the fifth anniversary of when they were earned. For this reason, don’t delay your redemptions too long.

If you’re already a member of the BPme Rewards program and have the BPme app on your smartphone, you can add your BPme Rewards Visa to the app to easily pay for fuel and track your purchases. But when it comes to discounts, note that the ongoing ones of 5 cents per gallon offered by the program and 15 cents per gallon offered by the card don’t add up to 20 cents off—15 cents off is considered to  include the 5 already.

New cardholders will enjoy 30 cents off every gallon on bp and Amoco fuel purchases in the first 60 days after account opening, 15 cents off thereafter.

Redeeming Rewards

Your discount on fuel purchased at bp and Amoco gas stations will apply at the time of purchase. The cash back you earn on other purchases will come in the form of points.

Points are worth 1 cent each when redeemed for cash back, and you can take your cash back in increments of $25 as a statement credit, a deposit to a checking or savings account or as a check. You can also use your points for gift cards, merchandise, travel or goods and services.

Rewards Potential

Forbes Advisor uses data from various government agencies to determine baseline income and spending averages across various categories. The 70th percentile of wage-earning households brings in $118,438 annually and can reasonably charge $39,337 per year to credit cards.

We estimate the average household spends $3,562 annually on gas. Because the BPme Rewards Visa®* applies a discount per gallon, rather than earning a certain amount of cash back per dollar spent on fuel, we can’t say for sure how much you’ll save per year since gas prices fluctuate.

However, we can do the math for a couple of scenarios. If gas is $5 per gallon, getting an additional 10 cents off per gallon (remember everyone can get 5 cents off a gallon via the app) is effectively a 2% discount. If gas is $3 per gallon, getting 10 cents off per gallon is effectively a 3.3% discount. Since flat-rate credit cards typically earn 2% back and credit cards that earn elevated rewards on gas typically offer anywhere from 3% to 5% back, the BPme Visa is competitive.

Plus, there’s no limit on how many gallons you can receive the discount on. Other credit cards have spending caps for their elevated rate on gas, after which you’ll earn just 1%.

We can make estimates on the card’s other cash-back categories. For example, our sample household spends $7,243 per year on groceries and $4,622 per year on dining. If all these purchases are eligible for 3% cash back on the BPme Visa, that’s $355.95  per year.

And if the remaining $27,472 in credit card expenses earns 1% back, that’s $274.72. Add that together with the cash back from groceries and dining, and you’re looking at $630.67 in cash back per year—and that doesn’t factor in the discount you’re getting at the gas pump.

Is the BPme Visa Card for You?

Whether the BPme Visa is right for you depends heavily on your driving and spending habits.

There are thousands of bp and Amoco gas stations in the United States. If these are your preferred spots to stop and fill your tank when on the road, and perhaps grab a snack while you’re at it, applying for the $0 annual fee BPme Rewards Visa®* is probably an easy choice.

However, it’s less useful for drivers who only occasionally fill their tank at bp or Amoco. Other credit cards offer cash back on fuel purchases regardless of what gas station you stop at.
