About Maserati

Maserati has a long, storied and bumpy history. The brand is known for gorgeous, glamorous vehicles that while expensive, aren’t six-figure exotics. Today’s lineup includes convertibles, sedans and an SUV.

The Maserati brand started in 1914 in Bologna, Italy, where the town square has a statue of the mythological god Neptune. It’s rumored the Maserati trident emblem honors this icon.

Eventually, the company was sold and its headquarters moved to Modena, Italy. Racing was rich in its history until the 1960s, when the automaker shifted its focus to road cars. In 1968, the brand was purchased by Citroën.

In 1991, the brand stopped importing cars to the U.S. In 1993, FIAT bought it, and in 1997 Ferrari bought a 50 percent stake in the brand, eventually acquiring full control.

In 2002, Maserati came back to the U.S., and in 2005, FIAT split Maserati from Ferrari. The brand continues to build its reputation in the U.S. with appealing, sexy Italian styling and performance.
