About Ford

One of the “Big Three” American automakers, Ford manufacturers a wide range of vehicles for the international market under the Ford and Lincoln brands.

Officially founded in 1903, Ford Motor Company is renowned for revolutionizing the mass production process with the introduction of the moving assembly line, which lowered Model T production costs and made the motor car more affordable and widely available to the average consumer.

Since, the American automaker has produced many iconic vehicles over the years, including the Mustang—the original pony car that started the American “muscle car” segment—Bronco SUV and Ford F-150 full-size pickup, the best-selling vehicle in the world.

Ford Motor Company used to be the umbrella group for many premium car brands, including Aston Martin, Jaguar Land Rover and Volvo. However, it sold these less profitable product lines to Tata Motors and Geely during the financial crisis that began in 2008. It discontinued its Mercury brand in 2011 as it streamlined production vehicles.

Although Ford is almost synonymous with passenger cars, the company is exploring alternative forms of transportation to meet the changing transportation needs of the 21st century. As start-ups introduced on-demand ride-hailing and tested self-driving technology, the company founded the Ford Smart Mobility division in 2016 to keep pace with other multi-modal and car-sharing businesses.

The company is also reacting to changing consumers preferences that demand larger vehicles over sedans. In 2018, Ford made a strategic decision to phase out its small vehicle offerings in the North American market in favor of trucks and SUVs. The Mustang two-seater and Fusion midsized sedan will be the only passenger cars it builds. Ford also introduced an electrified version of the Mustang at the 2019 L.A. Auto show, the Mustang Mach-E, featuring the silhouette of an SUV.
