About Subaru

Officially founded in Japan in 1953, Subaru was part of the Fuji Heavy Industries conglomerate, which itself can trace its roots back to 1915 and was made up of multiple companies including airplane, engine and chassis manufacturers as well as a coachbuilder. Kenji Kita, the chief executive  of Fuji Heavy Industries made the decision to get into automobile manufacturing and gave the company the Japanese name for the Pleiades star cluster, hence its six-star emblazoned emblem.

In 1965, Subaru introduced the 1000 model and the manufacturer’s first boxer engine, which is now standard on all Subarus. In the decades following, and while still under FHI, Subaru would find itself part-owned by multiple outside manufacturers such as Nissan, Renault, General Motors and currently Toyota.

Today Subaru continues to manufacture passenger vehicles ranging from two-door coupes and sedans to crossovers and SUVs all exclusively powered by boxer engines and utilizing symmetrical all-wheel-drive.
