Why We Picked It

For those with U.S. dollar accounts, there is still an opportunity to grow their savings. Though you may not earn as much interest as your Canadian dollar account, there are still high interest rates to lock your money into. If you have a big vacation in the U.S. a year from now, for example, this could be a good way to help fund the trip.

Pros & Cons
  • Flexible terms
  • Open online
  • No fees or service charges
  • Lower maximum interest rate than a CAD GIC
Details
  • Interest on GICs with terms of one year or more is calculated on the basis of 365/366 days and paid annually.
  • Interest on GICs with terms less than one year is calculated on the basis of 365/366 days and paid at maturity.

Methodology

To create this list, Forbes Advisor Canada analyzed 504 guaranteed investment certificates (GICs) across 43 financial institutions, including a mix of traditional brick-and-mortar banks, online banks and credit unions. We ranked each account on nine data points that included annual percentage yield, minimum deposit requirements, (low, medium and high) customer service, compound interest schedule, available terms and availability.

The following is the weighting assigned to each category:

  • APY: 50.68%
  • Minimum Deposit Requirement: 13.15%
  • Minimum Deposit Requirement Low: 4.67%
  • Minimum Deposit Requirement Medium: 3.67%
  • Minimum Deposit Requirement High: 2.67%
  • Customer Service: 5.67%
  • Compound Interest Schedule: 8.15%
  • Available Terms: 5.67%
  • Availability: 5.67%

GIC with higher APYs rose to the top of the list. Minimum deposit requirements of $10,000 or higher affected scores negatively. Investments with daily compounding interest schedules were scored higher than those with monthly or quarterly schedules. To appear on this list, the GIC must be nationally available.

Tangerine GICs: A Primer

All Tangerine Bank GICs offer nine terms, and interest is only paid out at maturity. You can hold your GIC in a registered, tax-sheltered account or a non-registered account with no contribution limit. Available currencies include Canadian and U.S. dollars. The Canada Deposit Insurance Corporation (CDIC) protects Tangerine GICs against a potential bank default of up to $100,000.

Types of Tangerine GICs

When you factor in the nine available term lengths and five types of GICs, Tangerine has 45 different GIC combinations.

Non-cashable GICs: All Tangerine’s GICs fall under this category, which means you can’t access the money until the GIC reaches maturity.

Registered GICs are not taxed within the account and include:

  • Tangerine RSP Guaranteed Investment
  • Tangerine Tax-free Guaranteed Investment
  • Tangerine RIF Guaranteed Investment

Non-registered GICs are taxed and include:

  • Tangerine Guaranteed Investment
  • Tangerine US$ GIC

Terms and Conditions for Tangerine GICs

Tangerine outlines its account terms clearly, but the key conditions to note include:

  • Early withdrawal: Currently, there are no GICs that allow early withdrawal. However, in the event that you’re permitted to cash a GIC before maturity on a non-cashable interest rate, you will receive zero interest on your principal.
  • Maturity payment: On the day your GIC term ends, Tangerine guarantees to repay your principal and interest earned on your GIC to your desired account.
  • Interest calculations: Interest is calculated on the basis of 365/366 days and is compounded or paid each year for GIC terms of one year or more. Interest is also calculated on the basis of 365/366 days but is paid at maturity for terms of less than a year. Interest rates are fixed, and interest is accrued on a daily basis.
  • Renewal: Your investment (principal and interest) will automatically renew for the same term at the current rate on the day of maturity. If you’d rather cash out the total balance into another account, you can opt out of renewal when you open your GIC.

How To Invest in Tangerine GICs

To invest in a Tangerine GIC, you can start by reviewing all of their GIC options to see which is best for you in your stage of life and your financial goals. If you already have a savings account set up with Tangerine that suits a particular GIC the most, for example, a tax-free GIC for a TFSA, that may be one place to start. But even if you don’t have an account with Tangerine, you can still open a GIC and have your principal and interest sent back to you at maturity via a bank draft.

Once you choose which GIC is best for you, do the following:

  1.  Click “Open an Account” on the corresponding page online.
  2.  You’ll be asked a number of questions, like whether you’ve double-checked your contribution limit for the year if you’re investing in a registered account
  3.  Select which term you’re interested in, how much you want to deposit, and which account your money will come from.
  4.  Select whether you want the GIC term to renew at maturity or to have it paid out. If you choose the latter, you’ll select which account you want your investment to be paid out to at maturity.
  5.  Submit the information, and a new account will open with your GIC balance.

How To Close a Tangerine GIC

If you want to close a Tangerine GIC, you can:

1. Contact Tangerine within 30 days or less of opening the account to have them close it.

2. Wait until your GIC term ends and have Tangerine repay your principal and interest earned to your desired account.

3. Wait until your GIC term ends and have Tangerine automatically reinvest your principal and interest earned for the same term length at the current interest rate at the time of the maturity date.
