About GMS Travel Insurance

Founded over 70 years ago in Saskatchewan to provide health insurance to the working class, today GMS Insurance is a Regina-based non-profit offering health insurance, travel insurance and group employee benefits across Canada online and through its broker network.

Group Medical Services is the operating name for GMS Insurance Inc. in provinces outside of Saskatchewan. GMS travel insurance is not available in Quebec, New Brunswick and Nunavut. TravelStar is a registered trademark of Group Medical Services.

What Travel Insurance Does GMS Offer?

Here are the key types of travel insurance coverage offered in GMS TravelStar Travel Insurance plans:

  • Emergency medical insurance: If you get ill or are injured on your trip, travel medical insurance can pay for emergency medical expenses, up to the coverage limits in your plan. These expenses can include doctor and hospital bills, medication and lab work, as well as medical evacuations, repatriation and arranging for a bedside companion if you are hospitalized.
  • Trip cancellation insurance: If you cancel a trip for a reason listed in your travel policy, such as you or your travelling companion become ill, weather conditions cause a massive delay or you lose your job, trip cancellation insurance can reimburse you for prepaid, non-refundable costs.
  • Travel interruption or delay insurance: Trip interruption insurance can pay for a last-minute flight home in an emergency and reimburse money that you lose by cutting a trip short due to a covered reason, including non-refundable activities and hotel stays. If your flight is delayed, your insurance can cover the cost of incidentals, such as meals or accommodations, after a specified period of time, such as six, 10 or 12 hours.
  • Baggage insurance: Baggage travel insurance can compensate you up to your policy limits if your luggage is lost or stolen. It will reimburse the depreciated value of your suitcases and what you packed. If your bags are delayed, it can reimburse you for the cost of the necessities you’ll have to buy to tide you over. It also extends to your personal belongings, if they are lost, damaged or stolen.

GMS TravelStar Travel Insurance Cost

The price of a GMS TravelStar Travel Insurance plan depends on factors such as the cost of your trip, your age, your answers to a medical questionnaire, if required, and the coverage you choose. There is no charge for dependent children under age 16 when travelling with a paying adult under the Emergency Medical single-trip plan.

Here are some examples of the cost for GMS TravelStar Travel Insurance single-trip plans for healthy travellers based in Ontario assuming a $0 deductible:

Traveller(s) Destination Emergency Medical with Trip Cancellation Emergency Medical Only Trip Cancellation Only
Couple, age 27 Mexico, 7 days, $3,000 trip cost $123.54/person $21.84/person $101.70/person
Individual, age 50 UK, 10 days, $3,500 trip cost $178.98 $34.98 $144.00
Couple, age 65 Italy, 21 days, $8,000 trip cost $388.56/person $135.66/person $252.90/person

You can reduce your emergency medical premium cost by choosing a $250, $1,000 or $5,000 deductible, or the amount you pay out before coverage kicks in.

Using the sample quote (above) of the single traveller visiting the UK, here’s how each deductible option impacts your emergency medical premium:

Deductible Option Emergency Medical
$0 $34.98
$250 $31.79
$1,000 $28.60
$5,000 $25.41

GMS Travel Insurance and Pre-Existing Medical Conditions

In general, a pre-existing condition is defined as any sickness, injury or medical condition that existed before the start of your coverage, whether or not diagnosed by a physician, that you showed signs or symptoms of or received medical attention for.

With a GMS Travel Insurance policy, any pre-existing conditions must be stable for 180 days before the start of your policy to be eligible for coverage.

According to GMS, a medical condition is considered stable when all of the following are true:

  • There has not been any new treatment prescribed or recommended, or change(s) to the existing treatment, including a stoppage in treatment.
  • There has not been any change to any existing prescribed drug (including an increase, decrease or stoppage), with some exceptions.
  • The medical condition has not become worse.
  • There has not been any new, more frequent or more severe symptoms.
  • There has been no hospitalization or referral to a specialist.
  • There have not been any tests, investigation or medical treatment recommended, but not yet complete, nor any outstanding test results.

GMS Travel Insurance Exclusions

In addition to pre-existing condition exclusions, there are a number of scenarios not covered by travel insurance, and it’s critical to know what not to do before you make a claim. The following are exclusions to coverages provided by GMS Travel Insurance:

GMS Travel Insurance FAQs

Does GMS Travel Insurance pay for medical costs upfront?

According to the policy wording, “GMS reserves the right to negotiate amounts payable on your behalf with any service provider who provides service covered by this insurance. Payments will be provided directly to the service provider.” However, the insurer also notes that payment does not guarantee coverage if you are later discovered not to be covered for that expense. In that case, you will need to pay back any amount paid or authorized by GMS on your behalf.

Does GMS Travel Insurance offer coverage extensions?

Yes. Your coverage is automatically extended for up to 72 hours if your return home is delayed due to a transportation issue. If you or your travelling companion are hospitalized or are too sick to travel on your return date but do not require hospitalization, your coverage is automatically extended for up to 72 hours once you are discharged from the hospital or deemed medically fit to travel.

If you want to stay longer on your trip, you can extend your coverage if you notify GMS before your policy expires and you have not yet incurred a claim or required medical treatment during your trip. GMS notes that calling GMS Travel Assistance with a medical emergency constitutes a claim whether or not payment is made for any related expenses.

Does GMS Travel Insurance cover COVID-19?

GMS emergency medical insurance covers medical expenses related to a positive COVID-19 diagnosis under the $5 million benefit maximum as long as:

  • You didn’t test positive during the stability period before your trip.
  • You didn’t have symptoms before your departure.
  • You’re within the effective dates of your plan.

Your coverage will be automatically extended for up to 72 hours if you are required to quarantine past your expected return date.

However, if you choose to travel during a Government of Canada “avoid all travel” or “avoid all unnecessary travel” travel advisories, you are no longer eligible for coverage.

Does GMS Travel Insurance require a medical questionnaire?

Yes. Travellers aged 60 or over are required to complete a health questionnaire or if your trip is valued over $12,000.

Does GMS Travel Insurance have any age restrictions?

There is no age limit when purchasing single-trip coverage. You must be 79 years old or younger if you want to purchase multi-trip annual emergency medical insurance.

When does my coverage with GMS Travel Insurance begin?

In general, if you purchase cancellation coverage, it begins the day you buy your policy and ends the day when you make a claim or leave on your trip. Your medical and interruption coverage, if purchased, begins when you leave home. Your delay coverage begins once an insured risk prevents you from returning home as scheduled.

Does GMS Travel Insurance offer a free look period?

Yes. For single-trip plans greater than 190 days and all multi-trip annual plans with emergency medical coverage, GMS offers a 10-day policy evaluation period where you can review and return your policy for cancellation and full refund of your premium, as long as no claims have been made.

Can I get a refund with GMS Travel Insurance?

If you’ve purchased emergency medical coverage, you can cancel your insurance prior to leaving on your trip. With a single-trip plan, if you return home early, you can request a partial refund for unused days as long as you, or a member of your family (in the case of family coverage), have not made a claim. A multi-trip annual plan is not refundable after your insurance takes effect.

If you’ve purchased trip cancellation coverage, your policy is non-refundable except when the premium is more than $20 and 1) a travel supplier cancels the trip and all penalties are waived, or 2) a travel supplier changes the travel dates and you are unable to travel on those dates and all penalties are waived. A multi-trip annual plan is not refundable after your insurance takes effect.
