Dr. Alyssa Cole Mixon (known to her followers as Dr. Cole and her patients as Dr. Mixon) is a physical medicine and rehabilitation doctor who is subspecialized in cancer rehabilitation, helping to optimize the function and quality of life of her patients. In addition to being a doctor, she is a social media content creator and blogger, where she shares what life is like in and outside of medicine while educating her audience on accurate health information. As a cancer rehabilitation doctor, Alyssa Cole Mixon, D.O., M.B.A. cares for patients before, during and after their cancer treatment. She helps her patients manage a variety of neurologic, musculoskeletal and lymphatic conditions and side effects that can result from cancer-related interventions like radiation, surgery and chemotherapy. With each patient, Dr. Mixon strives to enhance their functional capacity and overall well-being. Common issues Dr. Mixon diagnoses and treats include lymphedema (swelling due to lymph nodes being removed or other lymphatic structure damage), nerve compression issues like carpal tunnel syndrome, peripheral neuropathies, disc herniations causing nerve impingements in the back known as radiculopathies, musculoskeletal issues like rotator cuff tears, range of motion restriction, spasticity, and more, as well as overall deconditioning and fatigue. Dr. Mixon was born and raised in New Hampshire. She attended the University of New Hampshire, where her passion for both art and science led her to earn a dual degree in Classics and Biology. She then matriculated to the University of New England College of Osteopathic Medicine, learning a more holistic approach to medicine. Following graduation from medical school in 2016, Dr. Mixon completed her preliminary year of residency in internal medicine at Berkshire Medical Center in Pittsfield, Massachusetts. Subsequently, she moved to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania for her physical medicine and rehabilitation residency training at Thomas Jefferson University. She then became the first cancer rehabilitation fellow physician in Philadelphia, pioneering the program at the University of Pennsylvania. Dr. Mixon joined the University of Virginia faculty as an assistant professor in 2021. She enjoys spending her free time with family, friends and her dog. She also enjoys traveling, yoga and photography.
