American inventor J.P. Leggett and his future brother-in-law C.B. Platt formed a partnership in 1883, their first product being a steel coil innerspring bedspring. Over the next century, Leggett & Platt expanded to offer a diversified product lineup, including rollaway beds, folding metal cots, bed frames, bed rails, home furniture, flooring products and automotive seating product components.

The company started making adjustable beds in 1999 and is now the largest producer of them in North America. It’s also a leading U.S. producer of bedding components, automotive seating support and lumbar systems, specialty bedding foams and private label mattresses, components for home and work furniture, flooring and bedding machinery.

Leggett & Platt doesn’t sell directly to consumers. Instead, their products are available online and in retail stores across the country.

Are Leggett & Platt Adjustable Beds Covered By Insurance?

Leggett & Platt adjustable beds may or may not be covered by insurance—check with your provider to learn about your specific coverage. Some insurance providers may only cover adjustable hospital beds, which qualify as durable medical equipment (DME) if primarily for medical use. Medicare only covers an adjustable bed if it qualifies as DME and your doctor writes a prescription for it. Ask your doctor how you might qualify for Medicare coverage for a non-hospital adjustable bed.

Leggett & Platt offers 1-year, 3-year and 15-year limited warranties, depending on your needs and preferences. Register your bed immediately after purchasing so you’re eligible for warranty coverage should something go wrong.

An adjustable bed may help with certain medical conditions, according to Damon Raskin, M.D., an internist who practices sleep medicine in Pacific Palisades, California. “Having the head of the bed at a higher angle can help with conditions, such as acid reflux, congestive heart failure and certain types of sleep disorders like obstructive sleep apnea,” he says. “When the head of the bed is raised, it can put you in a better position for breathing and digestion. It may also offer relief from back conditions.”
