About Leggett & Platt

American inventor J.P. Leggett and his future brother-in-law C.B. Platt formed a partnership in 1883, their first product being a steel coil innerspring bedspring. Over the next century, Leggett & Platt expanded to offer a diversified product lineup, including rollaway beds, folding metal cots, bed frames, bed rails, home furniture, flooring products and automotive seating product components.

The company started making adjustable beds in 1999 and is now the largest producer of them in North America. It’s also a leading U.S. producer of bedding components, automotive seating support and lumbar systems, specialty bedding foams and private label mattresses, components for home and work furniture, flooring and bedding machinery.

Leggett & Platt doesn’t sell directly to consumers. Instead, their products are available online and in retail stores across the country.

Leggett & Platt Adjustable Bed Options and Prices

Leggett & Platt offers 12 adjustable bed base models in four categories: basic, value, performance and premium. The company sells its bed frames to consumers via partnering retailers online and in stores.

The Bas-X HC—the most basic model—offers the ability to adjust the head of the bed.

Value models can include additional features, such as under-bed lighting to illuminate the floor so you can get around more easily in the dark during nighttime bathroom visits. They also include customizable positions, the ability to adjust the bed frame from a wireless remote control and a massage wave (vibration) feature.

The performance line builds on the features of the basic and value models with “wallhugger technology,” which helps maintain the space between your bed and the wall so your bedside table is always within reach as you adjust the bed base position.

The premium models offer a more feature-rich bed base, including pillow tilt and lumbar support capabilities and a wireless remote that lets you choose from preset positions like anti-snore and zero gravity. Premium models can also be paired with a free mobile app so you can adjust the bed from your iOS or Android device.

Here’s a rundown of Leggett & Platt adjustable bed models, features and prices. Mattresses are sold separately, though some retailers offer bed and mattress bundles.

Are Leggett & Platt Adjustable Beds Covered By Insurance?

Leggett & Platt adjustable beds may or may not be covered by insurance—check with your provider to learn about your specific coverage. Some insurance providers may only cover adjustable hospital beds, which qualify as durable medical equipment (DME) if primarily for medical use. Medicare only covers an adjustable bed if it qualifies as DME and your doctor writes a prescription for it. Ask your doctor how you might qualify for Medicare coverage for a non-hospital adjustable bed.

Leggett & Platt offers 1-year, 3-year and 15-year limited warranties, depending on your needs and preferences. Register your bed immediately after purchasing so you’re eligible for warranty coverage should something go wrong.

What Sleep Experts Say

An adjustable bed may help with certain medical conditions, according to Damon Raskin, M.D., an internist who practices sleep medicine in Pacific Palisades, California. “Having the head of the bed at a higher angle can help with conditions, such as acid reflux, congestive heart failure and certain types of sleep disorders like obstructive sleep apnea,” he says. “When the head of the bed is raised, it can put you in a better position for breathing and digestion. It may also offer relief from back conditions.”

Meanwhile, an adjustable bed is not his first recommendation to his patients because he says you can often accomplish the same things by putting a pillow at the head of the bed. “You don’t have to spend the money on an adjustable bed to get the same result,” says Dr. Raskin.

People with mobility issues can use an adjustable bed with a vibration feature to help prevent bed sores. In a small study in the Journal of Spinal Cord Medicine, four subjects with spinal cord injuries reported a positive experience when using a hospital bed alternative (an adjustable bed) at home, noting no experiences of bed sores[1]. If you’re at risk for bed sores, however, Dr. Raskin recommends a hospital bed, which can be covered by insurance.

What Users Say

Many customers report that a Leggett & Platt adjustable bed is a dream come true. “The movement and ease of using the bed are wonderful. The help for my back pain has been tremendous as well,” wrote one Amazon customer regarding the Leggett & Platt Prodigy PT 3.0 model.

Reviewing the Prodigy 2.0 bed, another Amazon customer posted, “In my search for an adjustable bed frame, I wanted one that had the head tilt feature (I thought I needed this to read). I also wanted a frame that lifted the legs with the ‘knee bend joint’ at my knees (some models I looked at elevated the legs with the knee bend joint closer to the ankles, not the knees at all)… So, knees elevate in the perfect spot for me.”

Complaints from Leggett & Platt customers who reported to the Better Business Bureau include a bed getting stuck in the upright position, faulty remote controls, broken joints on the frame, a bed freezing in one position, difficulty getting a bed frame repaired quickly and lengthy repair time due to necessary parts being out of stock.

For repair issues, customers typically contact the retailer from which they bought the bed and then Leggett & Platt. A technician may need to be scheduled, adding another layer to the complexity of adjustable bed frame repair.

Who Should Purchase a Leggett & Platt Adjustable Bed?

A Leggett & Platt adjustable bed is an investment. Consider purchasing a Leggett & Platt adjustable bed if you have a health issue that routinely interferes with a good night’s sleep, such as acid reflux, congestive heart failure or obstructive sleep apnea, or you have mobility limitations that may lead to bed sores.
